This grows behind my house. It shows up around Sept/Oct. Has to be cool out. If it is warm, the mushroom deflates and lays flat. When it is cool and sun is not beating down on it, it will stand tall and proud...
I gave it a name, but can't really say it here
Wondering what it really is though
Oh my! We have some similar to those but they are a creamy greyish color and they grow around our pine trees. Ours stay up all the time and doesn't deflate. I don't think I've ever seen any quite that color before though Carol! LOL
Some of the orange or red ones look cool. Red death caps are cool looking, but you sure don't want to eat one, not that we have those in WI that I know of.
I've been finding tons of puff balls lately. Those dont look bad. Just a big white ball.
I'm well past the 'kid' stage but can't pass one of those without poking it a little bit to watch the smoke (spores) come out. ... saw dozens at my Oconto county cottage Mon - Tue.

I know puff balls have been mentioned before and caused me to be interested in them. I have never seen one in all my photo walks through the woods. The last few walks I actually looked for them and took a few pictures of mushrooms (no idea what kind they were)..but never saw anything like 'puff balls'.
Carol, I don't think you can eat a stinkhorn. It doesn't look very tasty to me with all that slime. I didn't notice a smell either, then again didn't hold in near my nose.
PK, I see small puffballs from time to time. They can be found in your yard at times or in the woods. Usually in the shade like on the north side of the house. Once when we hiked we found them the size of basketballs. I was so tempted to pop the big ripe ones, but I didn't want to breathe in all those spores. I heard puffballs are edible, but then why don't you see them in grocery stores or farmer's markets?
That's strange that I really can't find any. I have looked and looked. Maybe I just don't know what I'm looking for. Will have to check out pictures of them again.

My mother in law loves to fry these up every year. So I make sure she always gets some.

My last 3 were just found as I was driving down Hwy F heading to the interstate. They were next to a fence post by a storage garage.

Some site I was on had recipes for stinkhorns in soup. Told you how to clean it up. I think it's only certain stinkhorns, not all.
BUT I dont like mushrooms and dont eat them....hahaha I just like hunting them for others who do. It's like treasure hunting.

If I come across any more I'll take some pics before I pick them.

I one I found and that is the only time I ever saw one, had a hollow spongy stem. That's what made me notice it was the odd stem. Usually stems are smooth and not hollow. Kind of reminded me of a morel mushroom stem where it's hollow.
I would be afraid to hunt wild mushroom, because I just know I'd end up with poisonous ones. Too bad they aren't all non-poisonous because that would be a lot of free food for me.
