OK this is stemming from another topic and got me thinking how it would be interesting to add our thoughts on what irks us as to how people really misuse the English Language. Or perhaps you say things differently than other people because you grew up in a different state? Or noticed things said while traveling that is 'different'.
I know I will say oright or erright or something weird for alright. That bugs me. lol
I also know many (including me at times) that will say, y'all...lol not even sure how to spell that...
Okay, I admit it. I say "y'all" to people on occasion and even put it in my posts some times. I blame it on watching the Cooking with Paula Deen show. I love the way she talks in that southern drawl. LOL
A couple years ago my aunt from Oklahoma sent me an Okie Dictionary. It explains and translates phrases and sentences that are commonly used the way they talk in Oklahoma. It's actually quite hilarious! One of the lines I remember in it was: "Didja git to Wal Murt tadee?" Translation: Did you go to Wal Mart today? LOL
Also, when we were kids and used to go visit relatives in Missouri or they came to see us, we ended up talking like they did. Funny how you pick up certain pronunciations and different words like that in such a short time.
My husband is the worst person for butchering the English language (other than his redneck logger friend). He will say something like: "Git me that thang over there by that machine." ARG! What thing and where is it? I guess it's also a bit of a lack of communication and expectation that he thinks everyone knows what he's referring to! Geesh! Be more specific!
I do find myself saying "ya" instead of "you" a lot. Like "could ya do it". I say "git" instead of "get" and I use "yep" instead of "yes" more often than I should. But I think I may have picked that speech pattern up from my husband. I can blame him since he's not here, right?
I don't mind the "ya's" or the "gits" but what drives me crazy is using the word could where "would" is the better word to use unless you asking about the ability to do something versus requesting for an action.
I have fun with some words though like "sink" I call is "zinc"
and "gimme dat ting over dare hey"

I loathe when people ask "Can you borrow me a dime?" You don't "borrow" something to someone, you "lend" it.
That one drives me crazy too!!
I can remember those nuns pounding it into our head
"this,that these and those"
and bunch of us kids repeating back
"dis, dat deses and dose" kids can be nasty

Never heard that, it's always alright. It's alright, baby, it's alright now. OK cheesy song.

I know they say it down south all the time, but honestly it drives me nuts. Just not proper English and you certainly wouldn't put y'all on a resume. I know people will hate me for saying that, but what's wrong with just saying you? Worse yet, all y'all. Did I hear a stutter?
One that hurts my eyes (lots of guilty folks doing this), saying "use to" or "suppose to" when it should be "used to" or "supposed to." It's past tense.
Lots of guilty people everywhere on this one. Apostrophes misused in years. Example: 80's or 90's, this is wrong. It's '80s or '90s. The apostrophe is replacing the missing numbers. We had this pounded in our heads so much in school and if we handed in an assignment with it wrong that was a lost point. It sticks out like a sore thumb to me.
Oh here's a big one that drives me nuts, "prolly." I know it's short for probably, but why not probly? Still looks dumb, but makes more sense.

Anyone else care to share?

Ya'll or y'all is common for me in everyday talking... It's a small part of my Texas blood that never left me.

It's the same as 'that is' & 'that's' or saying 'you're' instead of 'you are'... to me it's the same because it's everyday words where i grew up. Yes i live in WI, but was not raised here & speach will not be the same everywhere.
Kinda like pop vs' soda... raised in TX i said pop, after many yrs here i say soda & pop sounds funny to me... can't & wont lose all my roots to WI
I hate that. I see dis and dat on the internet and it drives me nuts.
I also hate your and you're being misused. Then it's there, their, they're misused. Also have seen looser used.
I was once told (many yrs ago) that the internet social sites are for those who cant spell... because anything goes... my 9 Yr old neice now tells me that's what text is for... those who cant spell, because anything goes, such as 2/to or 4/for, U/you.
dis=this, dat=that, wit=with etc... all very common with teens & my ex said those raised with that urban accent don't know any other way or find the "proper" school way to be strange to them, considering it's what they hear at home... coming from the South & knowing how many WI known words seem strange to me, still after all these yrs, i can understand that & accept it.

I say and spell prolly & spose all the time, unless it's on paperwork here at work... just because it's the way i am i guess. Especially in text, i am NOT gonna text & not shorten words. Most text just as it sounds, nothing proper about it.
I have always had many African & African American friends & a lot of my slang comes from a lifetime of being surrounded by so many different Races & still.. I will admit i question some of their words, not because i am judgemental or bothered by it in the least, but there are seriously new slang words being created daily lol
I butcher the English language a lot... some of it, i'm sure, because I hang with many different races & pick up on it, but also because i talk a lot of Spanglish with family & Latino friends.... habit i guess.

Oh Oh John...shouldn't that be "you're" instead of you?

What I mean is when people type it, not speak it. Typing has no accent so they can't use that excuse. We all learned to spell in school.
Dontcha luvit- don't you love it?
wontcha plz- wont you please?
whatcha doin- what are ya doing?
you get the picture... dumb? yeah, maybe to some, but makes sense to those who text or chat a lot... I SPOSE (lol couldn't resist).
Texting makes sense, but on a forum or making comments to a blog or video, it just looks like you're either stupid or lazy. Not saying that about the examples you gave, just in general. Look at the idiots commenting on YouTube. Not very many intelligents ones on there.
I'm sure like Patrick says the reason that bad English is so annoying is because of what he does for a living. Same here, I have to spell check my work with a fine tooth comb. In school we lost a point for every error and that included punctuation like apostrophes or if you forgot a period. I had to have my husband be my spell checker because I was so worried about forgetting anything. If a mistake slips by, it can be very expensive to reprint a whole job in the real world.
Oh Oh John...shouldn't that be "you're" instead of you?
You're busted! Sorry, I couldn't resist!
yes "you're" is the correct word usage.
I am a two finger typist ( I should say key striker). and think faster than I can strike keys.
gosh darn, ding-dang-it

One of my big peeves is when people say they are having a "Garage Sell" or they have items "for sell"... run into it all the time locally.
Another is people who say they have an "ideal" instead of an "idea"...
I have gone to countless garage sales and have yet to find one garage for sale!!!!
Another great place to find drive you crazy poor english use is Craigslist. I am amazed that some of those people even know how to turn on a computer.
