Just read this article (one of many that's on the web right now):
The stage was set Monday for Michael Jackson's final act as the world capital of make-believe braced for what could be the biggest, most spectacular celebrity send-off of all time.
Made me wonder what everyone really thinks of all that is going on with his service. Is it to 'over the top'? Are you going to watch the coverage on t.v? Have you been getting out all your old MJ music and playing it over and over?
Michael was so many fans 'thriller' in the day. He was a musical genius in his own way. His dancing style set it's own style and he was top of the charts for years. I will not ever try to take his talents away from MJ.
On the other hand his lifestyle was to questionable for me. Where there is smoke there is usually something wrong.
Anyways, I agree this service is over the top. Not sure how it became this grand show but I guess when so many stars decided to come on board it became the show of the season now.
I will at times watch if I am around simply because I like some of the performers that are going to be there today. If I do end up missing it, I'm sure we will all have plenty of places on the web to see the most interesting parts over and over again.
I do want to say that my heart goes out fo his children that must be going through a difficult time.
I am watching on my lunch hour, didn't record it at home, but may watch the entire thing at some point online, maybe bits here & there.
In my personal opinion Michael Jackson was over the top & this service is appropriate for the King of Pop. I would have expected no less. So far i'd say this is the most beautiful "event" i've ever seen & he deserves no less in my opinion. Those who have had negative thoughts on Michael & believe everything the media & money hungry folks have tried to do to tarnish him, have the right to their opinion. However i have done my research and followed his life over the years & this was one hell of a man, with lots of issues, most of which was brought upon him by others greed.
I remember being a kid and crying every time he won an award, getting together with all my friends to watch his concerts on tv & just thinking he was the BEST that ever was. Most felt that way for him through all these yrs. upon his death several friends came looking for me on myspace & facebook, people i hadnt talked to in years, emailing me with memories of our "MJ awards parties" & how we should feel so old now since we were middle & high school kids then & he was 50 when he died.
Was anyone around for Elvis's service? Did they honor him as extravagantly? I had just turned 5 when he died, so i have no idea.
I'm sure Elvis had a huge service I just don't recall much about it. Was it as huge as MJ's? I have no idea. I'm guessing it was huge just not quite on the same order as this one is if that makes sense. Anyways, I was never a huge Elvis fan.
I loved Michael's music, can't think of one song that I didn't like. Something about his music you can listen to over the over through the years and it always seems like it fits right in the time's music.
As far as his life, I'm not going there except to say what I did before. But again, I am more about the music and that is what I liked about him.
But on the other hand, I was way out there where the Beatles were concerned and I would hope to see huge memorial when dear Paul passes. Now to me that is the one that the world should almost stop for the day.... One almost had to actually grow up with the Beatles to understand the special connection they had with everyone.
Personally, Michael was a great talent but I won't be watching..
Agreed, I'm kind of sick of hearing about it all. I liked him back in the day when he was still a normal guy. I can't say that even know any of his music beyond the '80s.
Why isn't Weird Al performing? LOL I wanted to hear some "just eat it, don't make me repeat it."
I wonder how would morn their own family members even half as much as MJ.
All day long the trending topics on Twitter are about MJ. I've seen it as high as 9 out of 10 topics on him. That's more than when he died. Some guy was even joking that he was going to unfollow anyone who mentions MJ.
Some of my older co-workers were talking today about how they remember Elvis had a huge service as well, being the King of Rock & Roll. They said they had never seen such a big memorial for anyone else, until now & they even said that MJ's service may seem bigger & all because of the huge internet deal, but they believe Elvis had a much bigger outcome, more entertainment & it was an all day event
I'm not sure about Elvis, because at that age I didn't care. I just remember I was at my cousin's house playing in the basement and my aunt came down to tell he died. That's about all I remember.
Was there donuts or peanut butter and nanner sandwiches at Elvis's memorial?

I remember elvis as an after thought myself. I remember my friends mom listening to his music very loudly & that's about it.
I was 5 when he died so i don't have a clue what they served, but that would have been appropriate lol
As the co-workers stated yesterday, because internet wasn't around back in the day, the media outlets weren't as BIG as it is now. we may never know many details. One of the ladies here (i'm guessing she is late 50's) says she had the opportunity to attend his (Elvis) Service & couldn't bring herself to do it because she was distraught & it took some time to recover... She must have been a die hard Elvis fan.
Wow, I don't think I'd get that upset about any celebrity. Sure it's sad and you might miss their talents, but to get that upset I'll never understand it. I've never cried or gotten upset over a celebrity.
Even when I have had relatives die it didn't effect me that much (so far), except for my grandpa because he was so fun and just a wild and crazy guy. It's sad that there aren't that many people who really touch our lives in such a way.

I can only recall 3 times in my life being that upset over a death... my sons father, because of the effect it had on my son & because we had been close for 15 yrs. my brothers ex because she was more of a mom to me than my mom since i was a child. My ex, because we had broken up in May 2008 & he called me a few hrs before he died (July 4th 2008) to tell me he loved me & always would, he begged me in voicemail to not ignore anymore calls, he just really needed to hear my voice, he went to sleep an hour later & never woke up.
But a celebrity?? no, i don't understand that either.
I'm with you on that... you don't ever really "know" a celebrity anyway.. just the persona the media projects.. how can you get upset at losing a fiction?

I think that it's disgusting. Like someone else said "where there's smoke". I wonder why so much to do about a singer and dancer. Why is there no "to do" about our war heroes when they die over in Iran and Iraq? Don't they deserve just as much if not more?

agreed... Not like they are family or friend.
I thought Farrah's service would have been huge, i know it was big but nothing in comparison, sadly. Bet it would have been way more of a big media deal, had Michael not shared the same day.
I never heard a peep about Farrah's funeral, lol.. MJ's is all I heard about..

The guys (at work) who were all talking about when they were growing up that had her posters on their walls etc... say they didn't hear about her funeral at all either, because of Michael, That's so sad
Her family chose a private funeral, instead of the craziness that was Michaels day, but i would have thought way more media attention would have surrounded it anyway, if for no other reason, because so many celebs were also there. I watched a video of the crazy amount of cars & they showed Ryan and others carrying the casket.
