I have been waiting for my paltry tax refund when I get a notice in the mail. I thought it would be informing me on the direct deposit, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
It was a notice that I owed a over a $2000.00 in taxes!!!!!!
That got my attention. After waiting for 20 minutes on the phone I discussed the notice with an IRS agent who spoke with an accent that very difficult to understand. After an hour had passed it was determined that I needed to file an ammend form 1040X.
I found the form on
Internal Revenue Service very quickly as they had a direct link on the opening page. Very nice that they set their current page for late fillers or special situations like mine. However it took me at least 20 minutes to find the instructions for the 1040X form. You would think both links would be in the same place, but no that is way to easy.
So I struggled with the 1040X for this am and have it completed.
Why did I have to go through this exercise?
I made a mistake on my original return by checking (Married filling spereately) instead of Married filling jointly.
You would have thought they would have questioned the two w2 forms with differnt names but that did not happen.
So now I will be waiting another 8 to 12 weeks for my return {8`-(....
The moral to my story
"Look carefully at the the little things. A check box is more importatnt than you may think."
In my case it was the difference between getting a few hundred bucks and paying out a few thousand bucks.
