Well, there can be no question that as a country we have compassion and charity when we're hauling boatloads (literally) of food to poor foriegn countries and giving it away for free.
So in that context, my motto is "we can be you're best friend or your worst enemy".
Now, when an american ship is hijacked in international waters, flying an american flag, It would not matter to me if it's called terrorism, piracy, a criminal action or lunacy. My reaction would be the same.
I would, on the first night, utilize my best option.
I would have dropped about 12 Navy Seals in the water under cover of darkness. They would have approached with stealth and unmatched skill. They would have positioned themselves on the main ship and alongside the lifeboat and on shore by the base camp. On the commandors signal, the base camp would be destroyed, the pirates would be dead.
Done.
Message to future hijackers: Try to hijack an American ship, you die.
My conscience is clear. I didn't kill them, they killed themselves with their actions.

Fair enough. But I disagree. I think I can judge because there really isn't any question on motivation. It's not for food, medicine, shelter, schools. It's pure money.
I agree with you there.. those guys aren't building hospitals, schools, or food pantrys with that ransom.. they're buying SUV's and pool tables along with cases of beer.. and more cases of beer.
The communities aren't benefitting from piracy.

I just don't condone taking innocent people hostage to make a point for whatever reason.
I think the media is going to perhaps push your point a bit and maybe something can be done about the illegal dumping and fishing (amongst other things) in that region as well as make an attempt to ease the hunger and extreme poverty.

Now that we have our men safe, it's time to act on the pirates (as far as I'm concerned) declaration of war.
They started it, now they're complaining about the results of there actions and have actually threatened U.S. and French citizens.
We need to go in there and absolutely destroy all of their (known) pirate camps on shore. No hesitation, no negotiations, no remorse.
Obama did the right thing on the rescue, don't stop now. The world is watching.
Here, here, we take far to much from small independant groups. How many ships do we let be put in danger? They don't want freighters & passenger ships to carry weapons, so who will defend them against these mauraders?
Although if they could carry some type of deterrent, I bet we would see allot less of this nonsense. A few well placed, large caliber rounds would give them food for thought before they tried to board another one.
