Do you have vacation plans for this year?
Have you taken a vacation already in 2009?
Where will you vacation this year? Will you leave the Country, state or stay close to home, but take a vacation from home?
Will it be a family vacation or just a romantic get away for two? maybe a girls weekend or a weekend fishing trip with the guys?
What's the best vacation you have ever taken? Do you have pictures that you care to share? I'd love to hear about your vacations, past & future planned.
Most people would say I'm on vacation year round.. they don't seem to think working on the computer or telecommuting is work!
That said, I'd love to have the opportunity to travel somewhere this year for a few days. My favorite recent vacation was in 2004 when we went to Tunica, Mississippi for 5 days to the casinos.
Anyone else have pets to worry about? What do you do with your pet when you vacation?
We took our dog with us last time.. boarded him at a private home in Tunica.. left the cat at home and she was really, really glad to see us when we got back. Even snuggled up to the dog!

How about Wisconsin Dells for theBubbler meet & greet?
Great idea, except a) I don't have a car, and b) I'd have to drive 2 1/2 hours to Kansas City to get to a decent airport. We don't even have a Trailways or Greyhound bus here anymore. The closest bus station is in Joplin..
I actually have thought about buying a 30 day pass someday and traveling around on a bus, taking pics and videos and then making a photo book out of it.. maybe next year.
It's the same as my wedding plans.. the 29th of Neveruary.

I haven't taken a vacation in 2009, nor do i have vacation plans for this year
Not sure i can truly afford much of a vacation myself, however each time i get to visit friends in Milwaukee, Sheboygan or Illinois for the night or weekend i consider that a vacation.
When my kids were younger we went to Texas for 2-4 weeks every year, how long we stayed depended on finances & time off work... that ended in 2005 when i had my car accident & it took me a couple years to get back on my feet (financially).
Every April i'd meet up with 3-5 of my girl friends who live in other parts of WI. We would meet in the Dells or Oshkosh & hit the clubs, shop a lot & just enjoy hanging out for a weekend.. we didn't do it last year because "life" happened. I may contact the girls soon & see if they are up to it.. i know i could use a girls get away!
Best vacation ever... Spring Break 2002, Jamaica. Much to our surprise Jerry Springer was doing a spring break show at the sister resort, talk about a crazy crowd of people on these two resorts... however i didn't participate in any of it... We did have drinks & sit up all night at the 24hr grill at the resort with Jerry & two of his guys, he is a funny guy & actually quite normal off screen. He popped up at the grill when we were stopping by after the club, it was the 3 of them, my sister in law & i plus 5 Jamaican guys who work the resort all perfect gentlemen... it was a blast & lots of laughs!

Mine would be February 31st... see ya there.
It was a thought, i'm sure you would come to lovely WI if you could
I actually would if I could afford it.. a perfect vacation for me is to travel somewhere.. forget this lying around home.. ROAD TRIP! CANOEING! SOMETHING! SOMEWHERE! ANYTHING!
We usually go somewhere for a couple of days for our anniversary every year, which out of the last 30 years, 29 of them have been spent in the Wisconsin Dells. We like to try a different hotel each time we go, but we seem to have spent the most visits at The Wilderness because they had everything there. We always took the kids with us when they were younger and they liked the water parks there the best too.
A couple years ago, we started the tradition of a "sister's weekend" twice a year to get away from husband's, kids, etc. In January and again in July, three of my sisters and one sister-in-law and I go to the Wisconsin Dells for three days and two nights. One sister has a condo at Tamarack that we stay in during January and another has an RV at Arrowhead Campground that we stay at in July. The guys refer to those visits as our "man bashing weekends". LOL We have a GREAT time! We also held our family reunion at Arrowhead Campground last year for the first time. Since we aren't into camping, we rented an air conditioned cabin with indoor plumbing though. It was the best reunion ever!
We also take "mini vacations" or "day trips" quite often. Last year we followed the Mississippi river road from LaCrosse to Prairie du Chien. Then we crossed into Iowa and went to McGregor and Pikes Peak Park where we could look out over the spot where the Wisconsin River empties into the Mississippi. It's a very scenic drive and you're sure to see some eagles along the way. If you're into antiquing, McGregor and Marquette, Iowa both have some great shops.
Every year, we try to do something special with our son before he heads back off to college again. Last year we went to the Bristol Renaissance Faire over near Kenosha. The guys had mini fencing lessons there and then fenced against each other. My son was so excited when he beat his dad! There is a lot to do there and we had a great time!
We never get the traditional full weeks vacation anymore since we have our own business. I don't know what we'd do if we did have that much time all at once!

It's nice that you guys get away so much, i wish i had more time away, even for a weekend... most of my get aways consist of a lot of driving to get there, a few hours visit with friends or family & a lot of driving again to get home. Weekend get aways get costly since i usually have to get a room everywhere i go, that keeps the weekend trips to a minimum.
My bestfriend moved back in with her parents to help them out since her dad lost a leg to an illness last year & hasn't been able to work or get approved for disability, so even to visit her now i get a room, simply because they just dont have the space. When she had her own place i loved to visit for the weekend.
Your sisters weekend sounds like a blast! I miss my girls get aways.
Ahhh vacations.....I love to travel. Wish I could do more. Every year we do one big vacation and try to squeeze in some mini ones.
This year hasn't been decided on yet, but we are thinking of North Carolina. It all depends on finances and if I have a job by then.
I'm not the type to sit around a pool on a vacation. I have to check everything out and do as much as I can in an area when I'm there. I like to get the most out of my vacation. We pick a different state to visit each year. We've been to 24 so far. We visit the state parks and national parks. We enjoy scenic drives, the local restaurants (forget the chains), and checking out the local attractions like museums or historical places. We'll check out shops and enjoy stumbling on to places just by driving around. We never sit still on our trips. We come back with lots of stories to tell and lots of photos.
I would have a hard time choosing a vacation fave. I loved all the waterfalls in Oregon and the ocean there. I liked exploring the tide pools along the ocean. We took a dune buggy ride on the sand dunes and I was cleaning sand out of my ears for 2 days.
I had a blast in Utah at the national parks and going on some dirt roads with our rented 4-wheel drive. We laughed so hard when it bounced all over the place and we got it jumping up in the air. I took so many photos in Utah; it's a photographer's paradise.
We had a relaxing trip to NY state a couple of summers ago. We hiked to lots of waterfalls and enjoyed the wineries of the Finger Lakes region...even though we drank more beer than wine. It was just so hot out that beer was more refreshing. We spent some time up in the Thousand Islands area, also. We took a boat ride and toured some mansions.
I loved Yellowstone and some of the other areas of Wyoming. I've been there twice. We saw bears, moose, elk and antelope. We almost ran out of gas when we were between towns. It was getting mighty scary. Towns out there are far apart. Always remember to check the gas before heading to the next area.
It's been many years since I've been to Arizona, but I loved that, too. We did the Grand Canyon, of course. I liked sitting out there at night and watching all the shooting stars in the darkness. We did the Pink Jeep tour by Sedona. That is a gorgeous area. We went to a botanical gardens by Phoenix. I can't believe how tall those cactuses get. One of my fave places to eat was in Page, AZ, which is right up by the Utah border. We ordered on calzone and 2 salads. We couldn't finish it. They say their calzones are bigger than your head and they mean it. The place is called Stromboli's and we've been there twice (2 different vacations). I recommend it. We took a boat ride on Lake Powell and someday I'd like to rent a house boat there. We also did the painted dessert, petrified forest, a couple of Indian ruins, and stood on a corner in Winslow, Arizona.
Had a great time in Washington a couple years ago. The main purpose of the trip was to meet up with other graphic designers I know from another forum. Most of us stayed in a condo in Seattle. The main events were a luncheon at a restaurant overlooking Puget Sound and brunch at another restaurant that we walked 1 and half miles to. Some us did the Space Needle and the Experience Music Project (music museum) and others did the underground tour of Seattle. All of us spent time down at the famous Pike Market Place. So much to see. My husband and I made it a longer trip and checked out other parts of the state. We just loved the Chihuly Bridge of Glass in Tacoma. We hiked to some waterfalls and did the rain forest. There was other things I wanted to do, but just didn't get enough time. I wanted to do a whale watching tour and take a ferry to one of the islands in the area. Maybe next time. And it was great meeting all the other designers, just wish I had more time to spend with them there.
There have been many trips to Florida and each time we try to go to a different area. Been down to the Keys and up the panhandle. I've seen museums, visited the Thomas Edison home, gone to the Mel Fisher's Treasure museum, visited botanical gardens and done the whole Disney and Universal thing. I've been to Busch Gardens, did a tour of the Everglades, have taken a dolphin boat tour, and have done the "Sanibel stoop" looking for sea shells. I've gone out at night when the tide was low with a flashlight looking for sand dollars. I've gotten up early before it was light to be the first one at the beach to get all the good sea shells. Amazing how many birds are on the beach at sunrise.
There's more places, but it's hard to name them all. Each trip is fun and an adventure. Exploring off the beaten path is the only way to go for me.
How did I forget Northern California? That was a fave trip we took. We drove along the coast to the Big Sur area and we drove all the way up to the Oregon border. We visited a number of redwood groves and those are just amazing. We hiked around Shasta Lake trying to avoid all the poison oak. We took a boat ride and did a cave tour by Shasta Lake. We stayed in a hotel made from one redwood tree and listened to the foghorn off in the distance at night. We spent time in San Fran and watched the sea lions by the fisherman's wharf.
On another trip the Cali, we stayed by Lake Tahoe. We went to see the Sequoia trees and did Yosemite. We spent time in Reno and took a trip up to Virginia City, NV. What a great little old west town.
As for mini trips, we do a couple of camping trips each summer and we do weekend getaways.
We've gone up to Minocqua area, have gone to Superior/Deluth, Minneapolis and St. Louis. We went up to Sault Ste. Marie to watch the ships go through the Soo Locks. We gone up to Pictured Rocks by Lake Superior and other parts of the UP. One year we went to Cleveland and Lake Erie to Put-in Bay. I didn't care for Cleveland.
One of my ideas was to do a vacation for a day. The idea was to go to some place that we've never been. Like take a different highway or visit a different town in Wis. or try a different section of a larger city in Wis. The idea was to just get of the beaten path and see what we could discover. So far we haven't gotten around to doing much of this yet. It has to be a place that you can get to and back in a day or at the very most an overnight stay. Even parts of northern Illinois would be doable.
Let's not forget that if you can't get away, there's always the option of enjoying a "staycation".
Just reading an article in the March 2009 issue of Body + Soul magazine entitled, "Take A Staycation". Some of the ways you can enjoy a staycation are by visiting a section of town you've never been to before, take the time to learn something new, visit or revisit an art gallery, zoo, or museum, pamper yourself with a visit to a local spa, or maybe just take the time to sleep in.
Blue... Your vacations sounds awesome! I'd love all of those! I'm not one to sit around a pool on vacation either. In Jamaica we had a private villa with a private pool surrounded by huge bushes that overlapped one another, so it was very very private, i loved sitting out there drinking my red stripe or tropical drink, after a long day of adventure of course. I cant sit still when i know there is so much to explore & my time is limited!
I like how you think, great minds think alike
Vacation for a day!
My bestfriend and i use to take a day & just drive away to parts we were not familiar with. Sometimes we would look up areas in WI and IL (even MN a couple times) that seemed interesting & would go for a day or overnight if it was quite a drive or whatever, i miss her

That's the way I am. Sitting around eating or hanging by a pool (I'm not much of a swimmer anyway) is only a small part of a vacation. I have a hard time understanding people that travel so far only to sit around the whole time and never check out the sights. I can sit around at home, why would I waste a vacation sitting around in another state. Some of the best things I've seen or done in other states weren't found by sitting around. I want to get the most out of my adventures.
I have friends that do that on vacations. They go lots of places, but never see much. They do many vacations a year and when I ask what they did it just involves eating and drinking. They even went to Jamaica several times and the rest of the group walked to a waterfall while they stayed at the condo. I would have jumped at the chance to see the waterfall. The condo will always be there when you get back. I've hardly ever seen any photos of their trips either, but they always ask to see ours because they know we have such nice photos. As my husband says it's not about the quantity of the vacations, but the quality.
Let's not forget that if you can't get away, there's always the option of enjoying a "staycation".
No matter how many staycations or vacations for a day I have, I still need my once a year big vacation. Staying away longer is not only fun, but it's a mental vacation and an escape from your daily life. You come back with a better attitude, at least for a little bit.
When I'd go to Atlantic City with a group of friends and they'd want to spend all their time in one casino, it would really frustrate me. Not only did I always spend alot of time walking and exploring the casinos, shops and restaurants along the boardwalk, I'd go into the Ocean Pier mall or the Convention Center or even go off the "boardwalk" and hit some of the streets away from the casinos.
