February 3rd is The Day The Music Died Day to memorialize the untimely deaths of musicians Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and The Big Bopper, all of whom died in a plane crash Feb. 3, 1959.
When my kids were young they were addicted to the movie "La Bamba" & i would cry in the end, each & every time i sat to watch with them i'd cry when the plane went down... i didn't realize the reality of it was so long ago.
Latina, have you ever seen The Buddy Holly Story? That is a good movie also. There was a number of songs in the movie that I didn't know where his. There are other songs that musicians have remade later on that were his and I didn't realize they were his. I was familiar with the songs, just didn't know whose songs they were. Now the song "That'll be the Day (when I die)" almost sounds creepy now that I think about it.
One thing I learned from wiki today is that there was another plane crash that same day in 1959 at LaGuardia Airport. 65 people were killed, but the news of the little plane crash in Iowa received far more attention.
This video refers to a small plane crash which took place near Clear Lake, Iowa, United States on February 3, 1959, killing three popular American rock and roll musicians: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, as well as the pilot, Roger Peterson
About the music:
"Three Stars" is a song written by Tommy Dee and first recorded by EDDIE COCHRAN in 1959 as a tribute to Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. Dee had a very little success in the 1960s with his RCA singles. The late Rock pioneer Eddie Cochran died in 1960 aged only 21 years

Yes the buddy Holly story is another that i'd be in tears over, each time i watched.
WoW, that plane going down & killing 65, yet getting less attn than a celebrity plane crash, simply sickens me. how sad.
Not to mention, rarely do they mention the name of the pilot who died with Valens, Holly, and the Big Bopper.
The plane took off in light snow and gusty winds at around 12:05 A.M., but crashed a few minutes later. The wreckage was discovered several hours later by the plane's owner, Jerry Dwyer, some 8 miles (13 km) from the airport on the property of Albert Juhl. The crash killed Holly, Valens, Richardson, and the 21-year-old pilot, Roger Peterson. Holly's body, along with those of Valens and Richardson, was thrown from the wreckage. Holly and Valens lay 17 feet (5.2 m) south of the wreckage and Richardson was thrown around 40 feet (12 m) to the north of the wreckage. The pilot's body remained in the wreckage. All had suffered severe and multiple injuries. Without any doubt, all had died on impact, with the plane hitting the ground at 170 mph (270 km/h). While theories abound as to the exact cause of the crash, an official determination of pilot error was rendered by the Civil Aeronautics Board. Although the crash received a good deal of local coverage, it was displaced in the national news by an accident that occurred the same day in New York City, when American Airlines Flight 320 crashed during an instrument landing approach at LaGuardia Airport, killing 65. Don McLean referred to it as "The Day the Music Died".
The Big Bopper's son was born 3 months after the crash, but he met his dad recently. He had him dug up! The Bopper was in good shape having been buried for 50 years.
wow.. never heard that rumor before.. interesting!

Since the plane crash, rumor held steadfast that foul play might have been a factor in the passengers' demise.
"Nobody knows what the [heck] went on in that plane but the facts are, Buddy had a gun," Richardson said.
Speculation grew that Big Bopper or pilot Roger Peterson may have been shot in mid flight. Because Bopper's body was found farthest from the plane, there was also concern he may have tried to go for help.
I've never heard anything about this speculation surrounding that crash... interesting, to say the least.
