I prefer Skype to the other services.. I get unlimited US and Canada calling to any phone or mobile for $29.95 a YEAR... and I added a SkypeIn number (with a local area code) anyone can call for another $30 for the year... or you can get unlimited calling to 36 countries for only $9.95 a month! I use it more than I do my regular phone.
One other feature I like is you can block any Private calls, calls from specific people in your Contact list, or any calls from anyone not already in your Contact list.. it also includes features like voicemail and call ID.
You can use Skype to chat free with any other Skype user even if you don't pay for a subscription either via voice, chat, or webcam.
connected to my computer which allows me to use Skype just like a regular phone or I can use my PC microphone and headset if I wanted to. My webcam is also Skype ready so I can make video calls to anyone capable of receiving them (PC to PC).
"MagicJack is an easy-to-use device that allows you to use a regular telephone handset to make calls. Skype is a software program, and accessories must be purchase separately.
Skype must be installed on your computer, whereas magicJack's software runs automatically.
Skype uses a peer-to-peer network, whereas magicJack uses a dedicated telephone network."
The MagicJack service includes free local and long distance for $19.95 a year. If you pay for 5 years they charge you $59.95($11.99 per year). They also give you free Directory Assistance, Free Phone Number(local depending on area) (In Milwaukee I do have a 414 area code), Free Call Waiting, Free Voice mail, Free Caller ID. I have a Uniden Cordless phone system in the house so its like the phone has never changed, except for that if I do make a local call to someone else in the 414 area code I have to dial 414 first. But for $19.95 a year I would dial 10 area codes. LOL Please don't go by anything I say here I was very suspicious at first and even kept my regular phone service while I tried it out(for a week). Now I have had it for 2 months and I am loving it. I would suggest going to the website and checking it out for yourself.
Yeah, I looked at Magic Jack.. at the time they didn't have my area code and you were forced to use the PC mic and headset for calls.. I love my cordless. I can take it clear across the Complex and still use it.
Home phone service sure has come a long way since back in the day when i used it... remember when you had one or two local companies to choose from & never was internet phone service an option? That's the home phone service i remember lol
I haven't had a home phone in probably 15 yrs, I love technology!
I do have a regular phone line as well as the Skype but I rarely ever use it. I just use the number for any business calls.

I remember when you only had one phone service and there were no deals. You paid what that company wanted and that was it. I canceled my phone service like I said as soon as I could trust this one.

makes sense... if i had a business i ran from home a home phone would make sense.
For me it doesn't make sense to pay any amount of money for a home phone, since my kids & i have had cell phones forever.
I can access my home and work computers from my phone & vise versa, with windows mobile i have everything i could need in a phone & pc everywhere i go at hand. any business i do, i can also access on my phone (pda), i have it in sync with both my work & home pc's.
But its not just email. Its a way of getting rid of your local and long distance regular phone bill. Its a regular phone just goes through your computer.

I need my phone to get on the internet............
I have a great deal thru centrytel and my monthly phone with internet access, unlimited long distance, call waiting, call fwding, call this call that...a whole package for $69.00 a month.
I pay $30 a month for my cable internet, and with my SkypeIn number and unlimited SkypeOut, it's only another $60 total for the year.
Do you have dialup or DSL?

I have a great plan that I locked in for 2 years with Time Warner Cables Road Runner. I pay $14.95 a month for internet. Then I pay $19.95 a year for the MagicJack service... Total Under $20.00 a month for both and Love every minute of it.
I'll tell you.. I love Skype but lately have had a few dropped calls. I can't say it's Skype's fault as it could be my ISP but you generally wouldn't have to worry about that with a landline.
The other thing I find somewhat irritating is even tho I have a Skype enabled phone.. I need to add a number to my Skype phonebook before I can use the phone to make a call.. that's actually the phone's limitation. If I used the computer to call, I could just dial directly from the Skype dialpad.
I am so frustrated.. again, this isn't a problem with Skype per se, but I can't get my Skype phone to work reliably.. Skype will load, it looks like it should be working, yet the phone will say "unavailable".. grr!
