Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service, that allows its users to send and read other users' updates (otherwise known as tweets),...
I'm currently have over 200 followers on Twitter. Everytime I twitter a link or page I'm surfing, Twitter automatically posts that page or link to all my followers allowing them to visit the link or read the post if the choose to.
Twitter is like a blog (it's a microblog actually) but you're typically limited to 140 to 240 characters, depending on how you send your Tweet. In that respect, it's almost like cell phone texting but you can "text" to multiple people or "followers" at the same time.
It's a lot of fun and one way to brand yourself on the Web. Many businesses twitter as well and you can receive their twitters by following them.
I think anyone who's online can benefit from using Twitter.. you can even use it to show friends and family (provided they're following you on Twitter) what you're doing online during the day.. what you read and care about.
If you're interested in internet marketing, it can help you brand yourself, plus you can twitter any affiliate links or products you're promoting to your followers.
I use it everyday, all day.. used in conjunction with Twitter tools like BigTweet and Tweetdeck, I find it invaluable.
I even tweet alot of the posts I make to help promote the Bubbler.

I agree it can be a good marketing tool for a business.
Well, they'd only see what you "twitter".. don't want it seen, don't twitter it. It's not just for links.. you can Twitter messages, like "Going to store", etc. In other words, it's just like a smaller version of a blog and similar to texting friends on your cell phone.

I don't promote or market & sure don't want anyone else knowing what sites i visit etc... otherwise i'd just tell them lol

I know & I've been there hun, a friend had me sign up a while back, i left soon after, when i seen it was of no use to me. I would say its more like instant messenger blogging (combo of), more so than like cell phone texting myself.
I love Twitter, but find posting from the Web a pain (via www.twitter.com).. if I didn't use a Twitter client, I probably wouldn't have used it as much. Using Tweetdeck makes it just like using a messenger like Yahoo or MSN, except you're broadcasting to (in my case) over 600,000 people at once! It's alot of fun and I invariably leave Tweetdeck open in the background so I can tweet posts, urls, or what I'm doing when the mood strikes, plus I can interact with other "tweeters".
Great when you need help.. got a problem, just tweet it and someone will answer with a solution!
Twitter is also being used to twitter first hand accounts of the Gaza news, etc.
I have to admit.. when I first heard about Twitter, didn't interest me.. now I use it daily!
I have a Twitter grade of 97.5 and my tweets now reach 891,000+ people on Twitter.. if you have a cause you're promoting, a product, or a blog/website, you can only benefit from using it.
I tweet a lot of the posts I make here for extra traffic and have made alot of local contacts on there as well.
Twitter isn't all business.. we talk about lots of things: tv shows, recipes, politics, etc. It's like Messenger except you're microblogging.
I find that whenever I twitter a half dozen times or more in a day (and the tweets aren't innocuous) that I pick up a follower or two. They're often interesting in their own right. Hope to integrate something with that here and in our free WisFolks.com blogs.
I asked Brent Spiner (@BrentSpiner, Data from Star Trek) on Twitter this morning if he could have been the lead in any classic (pre-1960) movie, which movie would he choose?
He replied "King Kong" (Figures he'd say that!)
Wil Wheaton (Ensign Crusher from Star Trek) is also on Twitter as @wilw
