Best answer I could find on the origin of this holiday came from Yahoo Answers:
(National Ding-A-Ling Day).. to promote the idea that a ding-a-ling is a wonderful, loving, intelligent, friendly, and the most desirable kind of person to know . . . a real bellringer!
Believe it or not, they even have their own club Ding-a-Ling Club, National, P.O. Box 248, Melrose Park, Ill. 60161

I try to never pass a red kettle without throwing something in if I have it.. our local police and fire dept are having a bell ringing contest this year.

It's really important that everyone tries to give as much as they can. I feel bad when I have to walk past but sadly that is the way it is right now. I have dropped change and or bills in all through the years so guess they can let me pass by now.

The bell ringers who were at our local grocery store today were three high school kids who were playing music on their instruments. The girl on the trumpet was playing it with one hand and ringing the bell with the other. They were actually very good and had drawn a large crowd. I also noticed more people putting money in the red bucket than what were outside of Walmart earlier.
I have passed many but as you say, have also given several times this season.. I can't afford it either..

That is really a great idea. Think I will pass this along to my daughter that is President of the Kenosha Orchestra Booster Club.

Yeah, I feel badly that I pass by without dropping something in at every one I see but I do try to let them know I have given this year and wish them a Merry Christmas back to them.
Last year at Woodmans Grocery Store I happen to be out in the foyer waiting for my daughter to finish at the check out. So, I found myself standing next to the bell ringer and of course we started talking. Anyways, she was very interesting to listen to all her wonderful stories of people she has met over the years of her bell ringing. It was great to see how much she loved the job she was doing.
