The method I use for wrapping boxes is to lay the box at the edge of the wrapping paper. Then I roll the box over 3 times. Where the box lands gives me the exact length I need to cut.
Then there is the 2 ends. If you have trouble folding in the ends, the paper is probably too long on the ends. It's much harder to fold in the ends when it's too long. Make sure the paper doesn't go much farther than the center of the box end when folded in. Much easier than fumbling with trying to fold in paper that's too long on the ends.
Hate to say it but I'm all thumbs (and lazy) when it comes to wrapping.. and I'll almost bet bags (and gift boxes) are as cheap, if not cheaper, than wrap..
Wrapping paper is probably cheaper because you can wrap a number of presents off one roll. Who buys paper before Christmas? Any smart person will buy after Christmas sale paper to be used for the following year. Same with gift tags, gift bags, and bows. I haven't bought paper in about 3 years. It lasts that long.
Even cheaper is to save the gift bags that you get gifts in and reuse them. I even save bows. Nothing wrong with recycling.

Wrapping isn't that hard if you're doing it correctly. Read my older comment about folding the ends of the paper in. Most people that struggle with this have the paper too long and end up fumbling with the folding part. If I ever have problems with the paper doing this, I get out the scissors and cut it shorter and then it folds neatly at the sides of the box.
One of my other tricks to making sure paper is cut straight is to buy paper that has a repeating pattern in rows that I can follow a fairly straight line with a scissors. Ancient Chinese secret.
I opted for Gift bags & boxes this year... sadly, I discovered last night that I have way too many big items, such as size 12 & 14 shoes and car floor mats, wheel covers etc that would be too hard to use bags, so I will need to wrap some of them
I have a mixture of bags and wrapped gifts. It depends on what items fit in where. It also depends on if I can find enough boxes in the house to use. Always a box shortage here since my husband uses them all for shipping items.
Here's a comment I saw elsewhere when it comes to gift bags. Putting things in gift bags might be easier, but it's not that fun to "unwrap." You know, that's kind of true now that I think of it. Ripping that paper to shreds if half the fun. Maybe it's the destructive person in me that likes that. Get those frustrations out by ripping up the paper.

Yes, ripping the paper to shreds when opening a present is half the fun! I used to hate opening gifts at my in-law's house. We always had to open them carefully so as not to rip the paper because my MIL saved the paper...she would atually iron it and use it again the next year.

After reading your post and thinking about how much fun it was to rip open presents when I was a kid, I went and took everything that I had in gift bags and wrapped them in boxes instead. I like how they look under the tree much better too.

It's that age. My grandma was the same way. Come to think of it, my old boss was like that he wasn't even hurting for money. He wasn't even that old. Maybe he got it from his mother.

hahaha, oh that's funny. I have some of each for everyone, so they get their chance to rip paper. It might be more fun for kids to rip paper than adults though. You'd better go put the adult gifts back in bags.
Just to clarify, I meant gifts for the adults, not "adult" gifts. Those are for Valentine's.
Good thing you clarified that Blue! I was thinking the other kind of "adult gifts" but I hadn't bought any of those for anyone. There aren't any of those kind of stores close to where I live. Although, my three sisters, my SIL and I did check one out at Lyndon Station when we were at the Dells for a retreat awhile back...just out of curiosity of course. My SIL got sooo embarrassed when the male clerk told her that if she needed to see how something worked, he could take it out of the package and demonstrate it for her! LOL
