Just wondering if you send out a lot of Christmas cards every year? Do you send them to everyone (or just the ones you got cards from last year)? Fancy, plain, eCards?
With the advent of email, I think I got more eCards last Christmas by at least 4 to 1! To be honest tho, I think I generally tend to send eCards as well to anyone I normally communicate with online and traditional cards to those without computers or that I have less contact with.
I can think way back to when I use to sit down the day after Thanksgiving and get my Christmas Card Address book out and all my Traditional Cards out and get to work. I would try to write a little personal note in most of them. I would have stacks of them ready to stamp and send on their way. I would try to 'think' out which card each person would like etc.
As they would come in from everyone I would check off in my 'book' so I knew if we received one and then I would post them around the arch on my doorway in the living room. For awhile I even had a Card Tree that you could stick the cards on and displayed the card tree that would be full by Christmas.
After Christmas they would go in a box so I could look at them all the next year when writing a new card to send.
Wow! Has times changed! And really not to the better either. Who has time to be so organized anymore, or to sit and write personal notes, or even afford to pay for stamps! I still will send out to a few that has always sent to me over the years that live far away and I don't have emails. For family I usually will just hand them a card with a gift, or sometimes if I actually have time, will send a card with pictures of the kids. But mostly I just go down my email address book and zip off an e-card or private message real fast. Fast, easy, painless, and affordable.
Actually I miss the days of the 'personal' cards, and finding the time to be so organized. Christmas has become so rushed that so many of us have forgotten to sit back and enjoy it.
I remember years back stopping in at my Mom's house to check on what cards she received. Always something interesting to look at. Really fun to read the short notes or letters from those we usually did not hear from over the year and find out how they are doing. Really cool to check out the pictures of the kids growing up and see how much they grew over the year when someone would send them...etc. etc.
Email is fantastic, don't get me wrong... but it certainly has taken the 'personal' touch and feelings out of certain things, and Christmas Cards is one of them. It's sad that our generation now won't experience the feeling and warmth of all the cards coming in the mail like years ago.
I agree, Patti.. somehow the magic of sending and receiving Christmas cards has been lost. I think another consideration is the high cost of postage and quality cards. I buy my cards from the local dollar store because i live on a fixed income but postage is a killer for me.
I don't send Christmas cards anymore. I used to send them, but with all the other stuff around Christmas, it just got to time consuming. Plus, it seemed silly to send cards to all the people you see anyway on Christmas Day. I can just wish them a Merry Christmas in person and save time and money.
This year I did get involved in a Christmas card exchange with a group of online friends. I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with, since they are all designers. Having said that, I need to get to work on my watercolor paintings and get those gift tags done. I have 2 done and 2 to go for my master copies and then I can scan those for printing the final gift tags. I'm going to be placing those inside the cards. At least it's something that everyone can use.
Sounds neat, Blue.. ever sell paintings on eBay? Alot of people sell ACEOs ("Art Cards, Editions, and Originals") on there. One of my friends from NamePros.com is a big collector of that format. I have three or four myself.
To get back on topic, you could do some one of a kind Christmas cards.
