Makes sense that December would be designated as Safe Toy and Gift Month. Just wondering how many make an effort to be sure their holiday gift selections are safe?
Here are some tips to use when purchasing or selecting gifts and toys:
Consider the child's age, interests, and skill level when selecting toys. Be sure to follow age and safety recommendations on the label.
Check for small parts that may present a choking hazard for children (and pets). Consider buying a small parts tester as found at toy or baby specialty stores.
Make sure the gift or toy you're considering hasn't been recalled. You can check
www.safekids.org for information on recalled toys.
When buying balloons, use mylar rather than latex balloons to help eliminate any potential choking hazard or allergic reaction.
Avoid sharp edges and points on toys or toys that produce overly loud noises or shoot unsafe projectiles.
Watch out for gifts or toys with strings longer than 7 inches as they can cause a risk for strangulation with young children.
Under 8? Avoid electrical toys or toys with heating elements, particularly if the child may be unsupervised during play.
Avoid cap guns that use friction caps as they may cause serious burns.
