Fall checklist for a safer, warmer home

High energy prices are taking their toll on just about everyone this year, so it's important to do whatever you can to create and maintain an energy-efficient home. Fall is the ideal time for weatherization projects, so this year's fall checklist is centered around what you can do to create a warmer home that has less impact on your wallet.

___Check all insulation levels Attics, those spots between joists in the basement ceilings...


___Check and seal heating ducts have a pro do this unless you're sure you can do it safely


___Check weatherstripping




___Check all insulation levels:



___Clean and service fireplaces and woodstoves: REPEATED BELOW? SAFETY



___Install a carbon monoxide detector: SAFETY


___Check smoke detectors SAFETY

___Seal exterior penetrations: make sure you know how to caulk or you'll have a ton of gunk all over


___Add outlet gaskets: You'd be surprised at the drafts you can stop this way. Easy for most homeowners to do...I even did it! May be worthwhile for renters - ask the landlord to pay the few $$$



___Change furnace filters: Do it now. Do this like smoke detectors, whenever the clocks get set ahead or back, plus more if you need it.


___Upgrade your thermostat
With automatic setbacks, by day of the week and time of day, this makes a lot of sense.



These last ones are important mainly for safety.

Yeah good stuff there.

Another tip: Use your ceiling fan to blow the warmer air down during the colder months.

Thanks for the tips.. my apartment door was hung wrong from the start and despite a couple of attempts to fix it, there's still a slight opening to the outside on one corner. One thing I'll be doing is getting a draft barrier for the bottom of the door. I'm pretty set on everything else. Helps my place is all electric with central air/heat too, I think.

Keep that indoor carpeting clean and fluffy too as that also helps insulate the house.
