I've actually use sweet oil for the ear mites. I had a flemish giant here with such horrible mites, the ears were so crusty and inflamed. But after just 2 treatments with the sweet oil she was almost back to 100%
I got the sweet oil at Walmart. Comes in a little brown bottle next to the vitamins
The glue also works on critters...as long as it's the pad of the foot. I'd never consider using glue in the fur. And it has to be elmers glue, not gorilla glue or hot glue. Plain old elmers glue that we send to school with the kids
I laughed when I saw the tip about spraying bugs with Formula 409 as I've done that in the past though generally I will usually try to escort the bug outdoors first if i can. I will usually kill a spider but hate to kill anything if I don't have to.
That leads me in to a little plug for wal-mart. I was there picking up critter food in the main warehouse...actually the van was loaded and I was just standing there waiting for the paperwork. When a bat flew right up to me, seemed to stall mid air and then kept going swirling around the warehouse.
It's day light!
The man comes back with my paperwork and I said you a never going to believe this, but a bat just flew up to me and then flew away.
He says "Yes I know. There are a lot of them in here. Walmart is a NO KILL warehouse and we are not allowed to kill anything. Only trap and release"
Is that cool or what?!!!
When I pull up into the walmart warehouse there are signs all over that read
CAUTION WILDLIFE and then a pick of a duck and babies or something like that.
So I never knew Walmart was a no kill warehouse/store until last week!

Actually I just read this but the article I read suggests that the Lemon scented Dawn works the best. Something about the lemon works great on fleas.
Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer ... If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can't find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground instantly
This is a great tip. I will have to make sure I pick up some 409 now.
I also have used hairspray. Spray the flying insect on the wings and the hair spray acts like a glue and they can't fly so they fall.
That's a company that can use all the good press they can get. It's easy for many of us to condemn them, even though most of us shop there from time to time. If you've got more stories, that might make another interesting thread.
Another Wal Mart Story from my own personal experience
My dad had been sick for the past 6 years of his life. 2 awaiting a liver transplant...in and out of ICU, rehab facilities etc....back home. Still needing care, unable to care for himself, Walmart allowed my step mom to take a leave of absense and they held her job for her. Not once, but probably 20 different times all of extended lenght of time gone.
Not only did they hold her job for her, but they still did her yearly reviews even though she might have only been there 3 months out of that year and got her yearly raise.
Whenever she needed off to care for dad, get him to his doc apts or whatever was needed she was allowed to go take care of family and come back when ready.
My sister started to work at the very same one. So when dad would get so sick they'd both be off work. Neither ever got treated bad for this. Their position was always secure and the Managers at Walmart would bend over backwards to help.
Not many places you can work at 6 years calendar time, but maybe a whole year of physical work and still have your job. Still have your job and get your yearly raise!! Most places would have fired you and not thought a second more about you or the family.
When dad died the Walmart my step mom and sister work for had to call in help from surrounding stores because darn near every employee was at dad's funeral.
They sent beautiful flowers.
Managers, district managers, employees...all attended.
We laughed and said they almost had to close Walmart for dads funeral......
Afterwards they held different banquets to raise money for the family. It was amazing what they did!!
They did fundraiser....WOW!
They made meals and brought over food baskets, gift cards.....
They continued to hold both jobs until both were ready to return to work.
They worked hard to make sure my step mom got in her 40 hours so she could not get her own insurance. Even if that ment putting her on phone duty, they made sure she got in the hours.
They have differnt "things" offered to employees for grief councling, help with budget, different sorts of help for this and that..whatever it may be.
Back to work less then a month and my step mom got promoted to a better position with better pay because they knew she needed it....we all need it, but they knew the desparate situation this is.
When it's time to move a huge group of Walmart folk is helping her move. It's just amazing.
I applaud Walmart for that.. my younger brother once had to herd a wayward bat off our enclosed porch with a bed sheet. What a hilarious sight that was! I don't know who was more scared!
I actually picked up a bug vacuum in the toy section of Walmart for just under $15. It sucks the bugs up into a holding container so you can release them outside. Still haven't had the opportunity to use it yet so no idea how well it works.
To get back on topic tho..
Anyone ever used cedar chips or moth balls as a "natural" spider repellent? I understand it's pretty effective and because I seem to have a "problem" in my crawlspaces am apt to try it!

Come here and test your bug vacuum. I have those asian beetles and lots of flys. Have not seen any box elder bugs...but where there are asian beetles there seems to be box elder bugs.
I heard then saw a cicada yesterday. Flopping around my driveway near some tall grass
I do not use cedar chips or moth balls though.
The scented oils in the shavings can affect the animal's metabolism and liver function, and possibly induce cancer or precancerous lesions, especially on the liver.
The shavings can cause allergic reactions and/or asthma, and trigger asthma attacks, in humans and in the animals.
Cedar shavings also have respiratory effects on both animals and humans. These effects can including triggering allergic attacks in some people, and triggering asthma attacks in people who already have asthma. Repeated exposure to cedar may even cause asthma in people who did not previously have it.

Don't use mothballs made of paradichlorobenzene--the warning label cautions against "prolonged breathing of vapor," but how can you use mothballs without breathing their vapor? The odor of mothballs hidden in a closet can permeate your entire home and increase to high levels if there is not adequate ventilation. The vapors from mothballs are also absorbed by clothing and blankets, and can be very strong when you use these items.
There are two different formulations for mothballs. One is NAPHTHLALENE and the other is PARADICHLOROBENZENE. Both are potentially very toxic. The naphthalene type is more toxic. Both vaporize to produce fumes wich can cause toxic effects on the central nervous system (possible seizures) and the liver. Naphthalene can also cause blood disorders (like hemolytic anemia).
Diaper pail deodorizers also contain paradochlorobenzene.
Mothballs should not be used around birds. Exposures to high concentrations of vapours of mothballs by humans, especially young children, can also result in toxicity
I have a foot that bothers me all the time but not sure if I could get a spoonful of vinegar past my mouth and then I would have to worry about all the things it's doing to my stomach and intestinal tract. If I didn't get sick from the taste or well...get rid of it in the bathroom it may land into my foot. lol It may be worth trying?
Well we have all heard of, take beano and there will be no gas so think up a slogan for Vinegar now.
Think that may be one for Stoney Rode (John??)....
malt vinegar with chips
beano for gas
turkey farts are so small
just let them pass
while the stink maybe foul
and it burns the nose
it's better than pig stuff
don't you suppose?

....Now, a very great man once said
That some people rob you with a fountain pen
It didn’t take too long to find out
Just what he was talkin’ about
A lot of people don’t have much food on their table
But they got a lot of forks ’n’ knives
And they gotta cut somethin’....

Vinegar sure has a lot of uses, but it tastes nasty straight.
When we were kids, my mom used to rinse our long hair with it. Supposedly it got rid of snarls and tangles. I think it also kept away mosquitoes because I don't ever remember getting bitten much back then and we always played outside until bedtime.
Thank you so much. That was really helpful. Badly needed these kind of remedies as I don't wish to visit a doctor for every small thing. Costs a lot and very difficult to travel that far every time. Thank you for sharing.
