food for thought
There are MANY issues plaguing the world but none more basic than food, drink and shelter. I am sure you do not have to travel too far from where you are right now to find someone in need of the basics, they are all around us, locally and globally.
How many times have you been to a "Convenience store" in the last year and pondered on what you would like to drink? Think about it and go to this link.
More than 1.5m children under five die each year because they lack access to safe water and proper sanitation, says the United Nations children's agency.

How many times have you been to a food court, fast food restaurant or buffet in the past year and again pondered on what you would like to eat?

About 24,000 people die every day from hunger or hunger-related causes.

We see the images on nightly news, magazines and hear about it in our churches. As a young man I was told never to waste my food because there were staving children somewhere going without. You might even have even heard a comedian poking fun at the typical parent remark saying something like” well send it them I do not want to eat it” and getting a laugh!!!! It is no laughing matter.
Now you do not need to be a Christian to answer this question but it is food for thought.
Judas received 30 pieces of silver to deliver Jesus to his enemies.
What type of impact would we have on the world if every man and woman that pondered what to food to eat and what drink to quench their thirst, would contribute 30 pieces of silver to the world poor?

This post really stayed with me over the months since you started it John. Well worth bringing back and having everyone take a look at this. Makes you really think about our lifestyles.

Re: food for thought
I agree.. many of us take so much for granted and this is just one aspect of Life we need to be aware of. It's not just the present generation either.. we need to provide for those that come after us.

Re: food for thought
I sponsored a child through Chrisitan Childrens Fund for a couple of years back in high school (lost touch when I joined the service).
Groups like that send you a picture and a letter from the child (generally transcribed by a counselor of some sort).
Thinking about sponsoring kids and the web, I've wondered what it would be like for a large group of people to sponsor a large group of children in a single community. The impact on individuals and on that whole community could be great. Transparency might be enhanced. If one of the sponsors ever got to visit, the rest would feel more comfortable that we were all making a difference. Just one of those rambling thoughts this post got me thinking about.
Regards,
Keith
p.s.: Might be a great way for CCF and others to go to market. Get a group...Scouts, Church, Lions, online, etc... to sponsor a whole group of kids.

https://www.christianchildrensfund.org/default.aspx is the site for CCF. Cost is 80 cents a day. I'll contact them Monday if not today to see about a group sponsorship.

What would we be committing to exactly?
Is it a set amount weekly/ monthly (like the 80 cents a day) or whatever we can afford, when we can?
It's hard to commit to much of anything right now financially with the economy & my income recently taking a big hit (lower by a third recently), however i'd like to know more & see if it's something i can do.

Yes, 80 cents a day is what the sites says. We'd each sponsor an individual child and endeavor to have all our kids be in the same community.

Re: food for thought
Something to consider also when you get a WisBucks style forum economy going here, Keith as it would make it easy to contribute to charity ribbons, like we do at NamePros. If posts were worth 2 cents each, it'd be a nice incentive to contribute to charity.

Maybe they could use "TheBubbler" as a code name.
This is in my humble opinion.

Re: food for thought
La Plaine, Dominica - Google Maps
Been about 35 years since I did this. Feels good to do it again. Seems like it was about $10 a month back then. Still, that was the net on 5 hours pay at $2.35 an hour at a Sears coffee shop at 16 years old. I had plenty to eat. Seemed like a good idea to share that good fortune.
Christian Childrens Fund provided a movie (on a big reel) that I used in a school Social Studies presentation in the little theater at New Berlin West. I called it 'voluntary foreign policy'. We don't individually have a lot of effect on the foreign policy of our country. We can have a tremendous personal effect on a one-to-one basis this way.

Keith

Re: food for thought
Thank you, Keith, for being a responsible and caring world citizen.. certainly a worthwhile effort.
My sister in law has seen world starvation first hand in Haiti. Haitians there are eating mud cookies:
She travels regularly to this orphanage in Haiti and my brother built this website for the orphanage and hosts it:

If 2 or 3 members want to get together to sponsor a child, great!
When one gets the photo and letter, they can share with the others via this thread...and we'll all get to see how the various kids in our adopted community are getting along.

Keith

Re: food for thought
If you can't currently afford the $24 a month to sponsor a child on a regular basis, consider going to the site and donating whatever you are capable of contributing, as I did.
From the site:
Right now, there is a wonderful opportunity for you to have your gift matched and to help Christian Children’s Fund protect children at risk or engaged in the most exploitive forms of child labor.
Every dollar you give today to our Learning for Life fund will be quadrupled with $4.43 from the grants we’ve been awarded for our education programs.
