food for thought

There are MANY issues plaguing the world but none more basic than food, drink and shelter. I am sure you do not have to travel too far from where you are right now to find someone in need of the basics, they are all around us, locally and globally.

How many times have you been to a "Convenience store" in the last year and pondered on what you would like to drink? Think about it and go to this link.
More than 1.5m children under five die each year because they lack access to safe water and proper sanitation, says the United Nations children's agency.

How many times have you been to a food court, fast food restaurant or buffet in the past year and again pondered on what you would like to eat?
Think about it and go to this link.
About 24,000 people die every day from hunger or hunger-related causes.

Dirt cookies for the hungry

We see the images on nightly news, magazines and hear about it in our churches. As a young man I was told never to waste my food because there were staving children somewhere going without. You might even have even heard a comedian poking fun at the typical parent remark saying something like” well send it them I do not want to eat it” and getting a laugh!!!! It is no laughing matter.

Now you do not need to be a Christian to answer this question but it is food for thought.

Judas received 30 pieces of silver to deliver Jesus to his enemies.
What type of impact would we have on the world if every man and woman that pondered what to food to eat and what drink to quench their thirst, would contribute 30 pieces of silver to the world poor?

Re: food for thought

Again excellent post John.

It's very difficult to even imagine how some wonderfully innocent people are forced to live their lives in this way. What they would give for even a small percent of what we take for granted. I intend to show this to my children so next time they are complaining there is nothing to eat when they are staring into a full refrigerator maybe they will realized how truly blessed they are.

I have orchestrated several food drives in our community and school before. I also give to our local food pantry as much as possible. But looking at this makes me wonder if any one of us really do enough. We should all reach out and give more and post these pictures on our kitchen wall, send them out in emails, pass the word.

Find a charity and donate. Gather up the unwanted cans of food in our pantries and give. There is so much suffering right here, sometimes not far from our own homes.

Re: food for thought

I missed this post when it first came out.

Excellent post!

Right now so many of the food banks are low and needing assistance. Our local schools will begin their their food drive next week to help in the collection of food for the food banks.

Some of our local restraunts even step in and help out

Re: food for thought

I remember this post, I found it a post with a very important message that needs to be brought out. I'm glad you brought it back up Carol.

I recently cleaned my freezer out and brought bags of frozen foods (including a turkey) to our local soup kitchen. Not all food pantries accept frozen foods so call ahead of time if you plan to do this. One thing they are looking for at this time is frozen turkeys so they can make them and feed those in need a Thanksgiving meal.

I think it would be wonderful if every member and visitor that comes on this site and reads this post go in their kitchen or to the local grocery store next time they are shopping and fill a bag and donate it to their food bank.

It doesn't have to be expensive items, mac and cheese, Ramon noodles, can soup or vegetables. generic bags of cereal, every little bit helps.

Another thought, buy an extra turkey and donate it. You can sometimes find turkeys for as little as 48 cent a pound. A nice ten pound turkey is less than 5 bucks. But it could help a family have a special Thanksgiving meal.

I assure you that while we eat our meal I will be able to think about the fact that another family is also eating because we donated a turkey this year.

Re: food for thought

I've been rich, I've been poor, I've even been homeless a few times.. but I've still never experienced anything like many millions of people go thru every day in third world or other impoverished regions of the world and even this country. We still haven't licked the problem of hunger amongst our own poor.

In Haiti, where my sister in law does work for an orphanage, people have been forced to eat dirt cookies to subsist.. dirt cookies!

I try to remember to go to the Hunger Site every day, where a click of your mouse can send food to hungry mouths FREE. Hope you'll do the same.

I really like the jewelry they are selling on the Hunger Site. They even give a description of the meaning of each piece of jewelry. I think I need to do some shopping.

Re: food for thought

You can't send packages to kids you sponsor because of duty fees so I went to the Dollar store today and bought a coloring book with pages that are meant to be removed, some paper craft books, and lots of glitter and motion stickers to send..

Re: food for thought

This time of year, even tho I am flat broke, I still like to think how lucky I am that I have cupboards and a refrigerator full of food, a soft bed, warm apartment with electricity and clean, running water.. so much to be thankful for!
