Titanic Survivor Died

Barbara West Dainton, who isbbelieved to be one of the last two survivors from the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, has died in England at age 96.

She actually died Oct 16 at a nursing home Camborne, England. Her funeral was just held Monday at Truro Cathedral.

The last American survivor, Lillian Gertrud Asplund, died in Massachusetts last year at age 99

Daintons father put her and her mother on a life boat and bid them a farewell. His body was never found.

Dainton returned to England after the accident. She married in 1952.

She avoided publicity associated with the Titanic and even insisted that her funeral take place before any public announcement of her death, Kamuda said.

"We respected her privacy," Kamuda said. "We're so open with everything and our emotions nowadays, but people at that time, they just didn't talk about it."

I have mixed thoughts about her keeping such a low profile. I respect her privacy and people of that era not being open about their feelings. So many people nowadays try to milk every tragedy they experience for profit. I'm sure she didn't have much to say about the Titanic, being 2 months old when it went down.

On the other hand, how much history do we lose because people don't tell their stories? Ken Burns said of his recent WWII documentary, "When a [veteran] dies without his story being told, that's like a library burning down." I tend to lean towards historic preservation.
