Well, I am stumped. I need more suggestions with a problem I am facing. I would like to know what you all think if you don't mind me asking for your help.
As most of you know I own and operate my own home based business called Kelly's Aquatic Rescue Services. I also am the largest Angelfish Breeder in the state. So I have two different things going for my business. My problem is I am trying to come up with a domain name for a website I am getting put up. I always thought that your "Web Name" should be the same as your "business Name". My sister told me that a lot of people don't use their business name as a domain name. Plus seeing my name is long...maybe come up with something catchy and shorter.
What are your thoughts? I would like to have something that has to do with fish. Not Aquatic Rescue dot whatever...seeing that will take away from my breeding part. My website will have different menues to look at the breeding side of the business and the rescue part of the business. My sister and I came up with a few "fish related" domain names but I am still on the hunt for that ONE that grabs my attention.
I had to kick the thesaurus a few times, but I came up with a couple. Check these:
1) FriendlyAquaticSafegaurd.com, or .org, or .gov...or whatever. The "friendly" term would cover the breeding, aquatic refers to the fish, and safeguard makes reference to the rescue part of your business.
2)ExoticFishCourtesyandRecovery.com, or .org or .gov...or whatever. The Exotic fish part is self explanatory, Courtesy refers to the breeding part, and Recovery regards the rescue.
These might not be exactly what you're looking for, but at least I tried.
You are asking the right people about domain names. Domain names are my specialty...(or at least I like to think so)
Your sister is right, many people do not use their company name as their domain name. I can think of several possible reasons for that. 1) the domain name is taken 2) people have trouble spelling it 3) they find something catchier that is shorter.
With any domain name you choose, you will want it to reflect your business, your slogan.....basically the message you want to get across.
We have a website that can help you pick a name. If you go to NameParkway.com Click on Domain names and then name spinnner. You can put in words that reflect your business and it will spin the words around and come up with ideas for you. Sometimes the results you get will help spawn other ideas.
Let us know if you still need help.
Are you going to do the website yourself?
Domains aren't that expensive. You may also want to consider separate domain names for each business. You can then cross link the sites and increase your exposure.
Thanks guys. I read that about separate names. I have my sister's best friend who lives out in California working on it for me. But I need to come up with the name in order for her to continue. I loved one my sister came up with but overnight someone snagged it.
My business started out as a rescue. I wanted to provide a service that no one even thought of. In the meantime I rescued a pair of angelfish and that is what got me going into breeding again. I breed them MANY years ago. Therefore, my rescue is ONE part of my business as the breeding is the SECOND part of my business. Then you need to look at is too is the rescue is just that...I don't make much money on that. But the angelfish is what is going to pay the bills.
So I am looking for something short but to the point that may link both things together. Here are the things my sister came up with...and please...keep the suggestions coming. One will have to knock me off my chair and scream to me......I'M IT!
FISHFINATIC.COM (get it? Instead of FANATIC...but overnight someone took it under the .com)
FishRescue.net is available, although .com would be preferred. Just make sure if you get something different get some common misspellings like Keith suggested.
Thanks everyone for all the ideas and advice. We are working on coming up with a title in the next day or so. OOOH the pressure! The site she is doing up is coming along really nice..with angelfish swimming all around too.
FISHFINATIC.COM (get it? Instead of FANATIC...but overnight someone took it under the .com)
I'd get this one asap. even if you think of something better later on, names are only like 9 bucks at Godaddy and you can always sell it to someone else at a profit if you don't end up using it.
I am not real sure about domains but I tried both of these as
.net
.com
.biz
and
.org
and nothing came up
so my suggestion is
thefishyplace.com
or
afishyplace.com

the one i use for finding names is Whois lookup and Domain name search
then use my hosting service to register them. like you I'm at a disadvantage in todays domain game since i only buy what i intend to develop. then let those that im done with expire.
If you were in the buisness of making money on the web, like as in community sites, web development, e commerce, ect. I would agree fully with Keith that the .com's rule. people are trained to expect a site to have a .com address. the problem is that the squatters have almost every decent short name bought up and parked on a server somewhere. makes it very very hard to find a decent domain name for one site that just promotes your one brick and morter buisness.
for the sake of making things easier, faster, and increase the chances of getting a decent name i would also recommend a .org for the fish rescue. or a .biz for the angelfish breeder. these businesses would be good examples of the reason those extensions were created to begin with.
the exception to this would be if you intend to grow, then eventually sell the site. then the .com will add alot of value to the package.
just remember the search engines index sites for content, not for the name. so have lots of excellent content, updated regularly, and the site could possibly end up ranking among the best .com's

Thanks for all the great advice. I guess it was settled last night. I am not the proud owner of: DRUM ROLL>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
finnedfriends.com
My sister told me in all my flyers and broshures I refer to my fish as my finned swimming friends. So she thought that finnedfriends would go a long with everything I have written so far. It is not up and running yet, but at least I locked in a name.
That way a general name could house both my businesses. Again the rescue is just because of my love for fish and my money maker is the breeding. There will be different menues for each side of my business. This is the best way for now I could come up with something that the name didn't focus on one and take away on the other.
Again, I would like to thank all my great bubbler friends in helping me and giving me advice. You guys rock.
Kelly
p.s. Once it is up and going I will let you all know and I hope you will visit often.
Thanks. I will post a link when it is all said and done. I think it is going to be really cool. It already has angelfish and neons swimming accross the screen.
No jive...1300 clams. I didn't bookmark the page, so I can't link you to the site. I thought 13C was just too much to pay. It would be kinda cool to have my own email domain, though...just not for 13 C-notes.
