Last year I purchased someone's first communion certificate at Goodwill. I like religious artifacts and stuff with people's names on it, so this was a perfect addition to my collection of stuff. It had a name on it, and was dated 1934. It makes me feel bad when I see what is probably a family heirloom at Goodwill, so I give these things a home. The certificate hung in our dining room with some of my other Catholic relics.
Shortly after buying the certificate, I responded to a theBubbler poll about how I collect old "junk." I closed my post with, "If you're out there Paul S., I have your communion certificate from the 30's!"
A few months ago, we got an email through theBubbler's contact form from a member that said Paul S. was her father! She had been doing a search on him and found my post! I emailed her with the name and date on the certificate and asked if she could identify anything else, like the church and location of the communion.
She emailed back with the exact church and location on the certificate! She also gave me her father's birth date, which matched a 1934 communion! I couldn't believe it, I had her father's communion certificate. Somehow it ended up at Goodwill, as so many family artifacts do. She is in Missouri now, where her father passed in 2000.
I mailed the certificate to her and now it is back with the family... all because of a little response on a poll! I definitely shushed some of my own family members that make fun of my odd junk collection! Just call me the "Junk Wisperer!"
