Re: Homemade Bird Snacks

Honey Sticks

1/2 cup bird seed [use the kind you feed your bird]
1 Tbsp honey [liquid works best]
yarn
1 popsicle stick

Tie 20cm of yarn around popsicle stick, make sure it will not come off.

Spread on a bit of honey and sprinkle bird seed over it and hang it in the cage

just an fyi....I actually set these up in the freezer because they were making such a mess in the cage.

Outside birds love these as well!!

Re: Homemade Bird Snacks

Seed Bells
small terracotta pots
microwave-safe plastic wrap or plastic oven bag
length of firm wire (coat-hanger type is fine)
birdseed of your choice (measure it dry in your chosen pots to gauge amount needed)
two egg whites per cup of birdseed (or thereabouts)

Beat egg whites until white and fluffy but still liquid - you're not making a meringue. Prepare pots by lining them with microwave-safe wrap or oven bag. Bend the end of the wire that goesinto the seed bell into a closed loop (so that birds and/or leg rings can't get caught on it when most of thebell has been eaten). Mix beaten egg whites and bird seed in a bowl until all seed is coated, then spoon the mix into the prepared pots, patting it down firmly. Push the uncoiled end of the wire through centre of mix in pot then out of the drainage hole until looped end rests flat on top of mixture, then push loop slightly into mixture. Place on an oven shelf set high enough to allow wire to hang free. Cook for approximately 60 - 90 minutes in a very cool oven or longer if pots are larger size. The important thing is not to burn the mixture and slow cooking is needed to set it firmly. Cooked bells will slip easily from pots, peel away the plastic wrap while they're still warm but don't handle the wire until it has cooled. Using a pair of pliers, twist exposed wire end to form a hook for hanging in the aviary.

Just an FYI - Sometimes if you use large seeds in your mixture, the widest part of the bell which is exposed during cooking will become slightly crumbly. This only happens for a half inch or so, but if they are to be given away, and you want a less 'rustic' appearance, just spoon the mixture into the pot as usual, but mix another beaten egg white with seeds of last inch and cook as instructed above. This extra 'adhesive' keeps the top layer very firm.

Re: Homemade Bird Snacks

Apple Delight
4 small apples
2 tbls. wheat germ
2 tbls. raisins
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 c. chopped pine nuts
1 c. thawed frozen apple juice concentrate
Avian vitamins

Core apples.

Put apples in baking dish after spraying with non-stick coating.

Do not use Teflon. It gives off harmful fumes that could kill your birds.

Combine wheat germ, raisins, cinnamon, pine nuts, and vitamins.

Fill center of apples with this mixture.

Drizzle juice over apples. Bake about 45 minutes

FYI~~ Minus the avian vitamins and the raccoons, skunks and bunnies also enjoy this

Macaw Muffins
1 package Jiffy corn muffin mix
1 egg (washed, shell crushed fine if desired)
1/3 cup apple juice
1 apple, seeded and diced
1/3 cup frozen peas
1/3 cup frozen corn
1 Tablespoon pine nuts
1 Tablespoon candied orange peel, diced
1 Tablespoon crystallized ginger, diced

Mix all ingredients and bake according to package directions.

Makes 12 muffins, not 6 as package states, because of all the goodies in there.

Leftover muffins freeze nicely.

**Crystallized ginger seems to be hard to find so I just get it at

Re: Homemade Bird Snacks

Birdie Cookies

1-1/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup uncooked oatmeal
1/4 cup rye kernels
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup apple sauce
1 egg, plus its shell
1/2 cup beef or chicken or veggie stock
dried hot pepper bits, dehydrated veggie flakes, chopped nuts or seed mix (optional)

Preheat oven to 350F

Combine dry ingredients, add butter and apple sauce until well blended

Add the egg, and stock.

Knead the dough for a few minutes.

If you are adding any "goodies" (hot peppers, veggie flakes, etc...), add those now.

Roll out the dough to about 1/2" thickness (sprinkle flour on table top first!) and use cookie cutters to create whatever shapes you like.

Or, roll dough into a thin rope, cut bits off it into treat sizes.

Place cookies on oiled cookie sheet.

Re-roll scraps and make more cookies.

Bake biscuits for 25-30 minutes. Remove from oven, cool, store.

Re: Homemade Bird Snacks

Early Bird Bread

2 packages of corn bread mix (not sweetened corn muffin mix!)
frozen vegetable of choice (chopped fresh, or rinsed canned are both OK
frozen fruit of choice (chopped fresh, or unsweetened canned are both OK)
hulled raw unsalted sunflower seeds (available at bulk food stores near snacks)
raisins
hulled raw millet seed (available at bulk food stores near cereal section)
fruit juice (orange, apple, etc.) (using more than one kind is OK)
eggs (1 more than packages call for)

Preheat oven following bread mix instructions.

Grease 9" x 13" cake pan.

Follow instructions on package for number of eggs used, then add one more egg.

Substitute fruit juices for milk required by mix.

Add approximately 1/2 cup of hulled sunflower seeds, and approximately 1/2 to 3/4 cup each of frozen veggie and frozen fruit.

Add handful of raisins.

Mix all ingredients together well.

Pour into heavily greased 9"x 13" cake pan.

Sprinkle small handful of hulled millet seeds over top.

Bake until cake pulls away from sides of pan and is golden brown on top (it should be hard on top, but not burned.)

Let cool completely, then cut into small (1") cubes.

Place cubes and any crumbled pieces in a plastic bag or container, and freeze.

To use, just remove one or two cubes and thaw, then crumble up into bird's dish.

Vitamins or wheatgrass powder can be sprinkled over the cooled, baked cake.

For one bird, this should last several weeks. Use as a treat to supplement the regular diet.

Re: Homemade Bird Snacks

For Parents Only

1 part shelled peanut
1 part hulled pumpkin seed
1 part hulled sunflower seeds
1 part hulled millet

Mix together and store in airtight container.

This mixture is great to feed parents who are feeding young.

It is a fast source of food and they eat it very well.

Re: Homemade Bird Snacks

The Great Veggie Mix

3 eggs hard-boiled, then mashed into little pieces
1 or 2 bags frozen corn
1 bag frozen peas
1 bag mix frozen veggies
1/2 Cup each of White and Brown rice, and cook per instructions
several shredded carrots
1 medium or good size yam or sweet potato
1 C baby cereal (like Gerber's)
2 jars (the real small ones) first foods (Gerber's) baby food, some meat flavor like chicken, turkey etc....
8 oz baby juice (I like to use this with water to cook the rice)
1/2 C wheat germ, toasted
3/4 C raisins, blanched

Hard-boil the eggs (20 minutes or so should be safe for them) Use the egg water to blanch the raisins for a minute or two Start the rice at the same time. use the baby fruit juice and water to cook the rice. In a food processor, shred the carrots and the sweet potato or yam. Toast the wheat germ in the over - shouldn't take very long maybe 8 minutes. Once the eggs are done, use a fork to mash it up into small bits. At this point put in about half the baby cereal and start getting this mixed in. When the rice is done mix the 2 jars of baby food into it. Then start mixing this up with the egg and baby cereal. adding the rest of the baby cereal, and the toasted wheat germ, and start putting in the frozen veggies. At the end, stir in the blanched raisins. Freeze, using ice cube trays, or spread out on a baking sheet

To Use: Microwave a block and add any fresh fruit that's available and sprinkle on the vitamins.
