The wonderful charitable family event Quarry Quest is being held on September 15th this year. For those of you unfamiliar with Quarry Quest, it is a fun-filled educational adventure held at the Michels Material quarry on Tullar Rd. in Neenah, where families can learn about geology, quarries, and construction. Among the numerous activities, visitors can take a guided tour of the quarry in a huge haul truck, operate cool excavating equipment, and collect real fossils.
The Weis Earth Science Museum (WESM) is once again a sponsor and beneficiary of Quarry Quest. For those of you who don't know, the WESM must generate all of its own funding--we receive no local, state, federal, or university funds--and Quarry Quest is our biggest fund-raiser. Last year, we received $11,000 in funding from Quarry Quest. The museum needs this revenue to continue offering school tours, improving and maintaining exhibits, providing programs to the community--basically, getting kids excited about science. Other beneficiaries this year are the Boy Scouts and the Quarry Quest Environmental Field Trip Fund (which funds bus transportation for school field trips throughout the Fox Valley), as well as fraternal organizations and other groups.
In order to continue to receive Quarry Quest funding, I need to help find volunteers for the event. It requires more than 1000 volunteers to make Quarry Quest work, and we could sure use YOUR help. Spend a great day outdoors helping kids learn about the world around them . There are many different kinds of volunteer opportunities and activities; 2 hour, half day and full day shifts are available. If you're interested in helping out, please contact Holly at 920.924.4300, ext. 2241 or e-mail at
hgygax@michels.us ASAP. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Please also send me an e-mail if you decide to volunteer, so that I can keep track of WESM participation.
If you can't volunteer, bring your kids or grandkids (neices, nephews, godchildren and neighbors' kids, too) out to enjoy the day. Visit the Quarry Quest website (
www.quarryquest.com ) for more information. Save money, and buy your Quarry Quest tickets at the Museum!
Thanks!
