Events at Woodland Dunes Nature Center, Two Rivers-Manitowoc
Events planned at Woodland Dunes Nature Center
TWO RIVERS — Woodland Dunes Nature Center, located on Highway 310 on the west side of Two Rivers, has announced a variety of upcoming events:
 Today, 6:30 p.m. — Full Moon Hike
Join Bernie Brouchoud to explore the surprisingly bright side of winter — the night side. Participants will have a chance to experience the world as much of the wild world does — from a nocturnal point of view. Only rain will prevent the hike from taking place. Those interested should meet at the nature center headquarters at 6:30 p.m. Folks Bernie is awesome last fall my family participated in the Traking of the Northern Saw Whet Owls (we actualy had a record tally of way over a hundred Owls) While on the prowl for these tiny birds we had a lot of sightings of the nocturnal critters. I must say this will well be worth the trip to Two Rivers. Dress Warm though!
 Saturday, Feb. 10, 10 a.m. — Health Connections with Dr. Roy Ozanne
Ozanne, a native of Two Rivers, will speak about the benefits of a healthy diet not only for humans but for the environment as well.
Join Kelly and Jody Henseler to learn about the basics of tracking and explore the trails looking for evidence of winter wildlife. I'll be actually looking into this shop, whose up for joining me?
The concert is part of Woodland Dunes' Masters of Folk Music series. It is Schmidt's first visit to Woodland Dunes. She sings, plays the 12-string guitar and dulcimer, and shares her sense of humor. For more information, visit the Web at woodlanddunesconcerts.org.
 Wednesday, Feb. 28, 6:30 p.m. — Selecting Trees for Cutting
The program is part of the Woodland Owner's Workshop series. Foresters will give advice on the rationale behind the choice of trees for cutting to manage one's woodlot.
 Saturday, March 3, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Woodland Dunes Reads Leopold
The event will include reading from Aldo Leopold's "Sand County Almanac" as well as activities taken from his writings. Leopold is one of Wisconsin's most notable naturalists and was one of the founders of the science of wildlife management at the University of Wisconsin. His writings on conservation ethics have influenced many people in the fields of resource management and environmental education.
This is Woodland Dunes' first Leopold weekend, held in conjunction with many other Leopold activities across the state.
 Saturday, March 10, 7 p.m. — Peggy Seeger Concert
This is the second time Seeger, sister of Pete and Mike Seeger and a folk music icon in her own right, will appear at Woodland Dunes. Audience members should be prepared for strong political views from this internationally known performer. More information is available on the Web at woodlanddunesconcerts.org.
 For more information on any of the activities taking place at Woodland Dunes, contact director Jim Knickelbine at 920-793-4007.

The saw whet owl, shown above with Bernie Bouchard and two unidentified children, are the highlight of Owl Fest Days at the Woodland Dunes. The owls are very passive and a thrill to hold and observe. Anyone who loves wildlife and are able to attend the October event should monitor this site as I am sure AJE will be posting date and time. The number of owls on hand is determined by how many were "trapped" the previous night for banding purposes and retained for the public owl fest the next morning. Some years there has been many captured owls and other years they had only one or two.
The weather apparently has a lot to do with how many owls are actively migrating at any time. See you at Owl Fest!
Hi all this is for those interested in becoming involved in the Saw Whet Owl DNR migration project. You must attend the introduction class to North Americans smallest owl the Saw Whet. It will be located at Woodland Dunes Nature Center in Two Rivers (Manitowoc County) this Wen the 19th at 7PM. You'll get an overview to the birds and further instructions. A sign up sheet will be available from then until after Thanksgiving; voluteers will be needed at the following timeframes 10PM, 12AM and 2AM. I highly would consider this special and very unique oppertunity.
Happy Owl Catching!
 PS: Owlfest is schedualed for Sat Oct 20, 2007 to begin around 8AM.

2007 Had 5 birds and a wonderful turnout for the event. Thank you to all who came to share a bit of Manitowoc County.
I'll see you at 2008 Owlfest, I'll be one of the volunteers and probably be up half the night before being one of the "Night Gang!"
