A DIY backyard mechanic can convert a gas powered car to electric for between $7000 - $10,000 (plus the cost of used car) <-- would be way cheaper but the parts are way overpriced.
Anyway Joe the backyard machanic can go and buy a New gas powered car for say $20,000, convert the car to electric, price tag: $27,000 - $30,000.
He can even sell the discarded new gas engine and other expensive parts and save even more money.

Bob Lutz of GM says it would cost $100,000 to build an electric car, What

As far as I'm concerned GM wants us to stay on oil.
Chevy Volt - Price tag: $40,000
Joe's New Electric car - Price tag: $27,000 - $30,000
Now let's factor in the Government rebate of $7500
GM Chevy Volt - $32,500
Joe's New electric car - $19,500 - $23,500
Ok am I missing something?
By the way, the Chevy Volt still uses gas.
