Pay attention when you hear from the government that you will be able to keep your own insurance if you want. You will still have a "choice".
The problem, in my view, is covered very well in this article.
The Beginning of the End of Private Health Insurance: How Obama's public health insurance option will quickly evolve into the only option - Reason Magazine
The choice will disolve over time. Many companies that now offer insurance to lure and keep employees, will offload that cost because there's now a government option. If companies are forced to offer insurance, some companies will go out of business because they can't afford the cost. Or, it'll be so expensive that the government "choice" is the only one that'll be taken.
The government choice will be cheaper and more attractive when you buy it, but the coverage and quality will erode over time.
There are ways to help control health care costs without the government taking it over.
3 simple things come to mind that could be easily done and would go a long way. Then more things can be considered to keep chewing at it.
1. Tort reform. Loser pays. Malpractice insurance is forcing Doctors to skyrocket their rates. That's a fact.
2. Pull back on government mandates on health insurances companies. The government is already deeply entrenched in private health-care by forcing insurance companies to cover many things as mandates driving up costs for everyone.
3. Stop giving free health care to
illegal aliens. It's the law right now. Repeal it. It costs California about 4 billion a year for this alone. That's just one State.
That's a start.
