Some great points you make, Keith.. and while I don't want to sound geo or ethnocentric, when I see the problems throughout the world, I always feel blessed to live in a great country like the US of A.
I may not be in great health but I'm blessed that I'm still able to get around and the old heart is still beating!
Blessed that I have a roof over my head, cupboards and a fridge with food in them (even ice cream, yay!), good friends, a job..
My mom used to quote this all the time:
