Because we can detect skunk spray thiols at about 10 parts per billion..... it can travel quite some distance with us able to smell it.
How far? I'm not sure on exact distance....
The major compound of the striped skunk ~ skunk spray is
(E)-2-butene-1-thiol.
Second compound is (E)- 2-butenyl thioacetate.
At high concentrations the secretion causes nausea and retching and will act like tear gas if the liquid gets in the eyes.
At lower concentrations it has a very foul odor.
Skunk Spray is a yellow oil composed of thiols and thioacetate derivatives of these thiols. This secretion is stored in two walnut sized glands with openings in the anus. When alarmed or attacked, a skunk can direct this spray several feet.
Striped Skunk Spray smells different then spotted skunk spray or hog-nosed skunk spray.
