That quote made me angry too. What a moron. People don't realize the expenses shelters and rescues face. Beyond normal food, housing and vet care, shelters often receive animals with health problems that require extensive medication or surgery. They also have to pay for their facility, utilities and staff.
We've adopted shelter cats and taken in strays. Dollar for dollar, adopting a shelter cat was much cheaper than starting from scratch. The shelter cats came neutered with initial shots. This is why we contribute to shelters... we want other pets to have the same chance at a loving home.
