In a former lifetime, I had a cat that was an outdoor cat...that is until two things happened.
As cats do, they need to use the sandbox. This cat was litterally (spelling intended) using the neighbors sandbox as her own personal sandbox. It didn't make the neighbor too happy when she had to buy a litter scoop to clean the sandbox out for her children to play. Very unhealthy for the children.
Soon afterward my cat contracted feline leukemia, which I am certain was from another cat in the neighborhood. After we had to have her put down, I vowed to always keep indoor cats.
A leash works for many cats, but I agree it takes away they freedom to hunt. I rather find indoor hunting activities where it is safer.
