What's probably happening is that your connection is timing out before the photo finishes uploading. That wouldn't be a problem with the site so much as a connection problem. Since the error isn't in the program, it doesn't realize that it needs to kick you back an error and it just doesn't progress to the next steps with the file.
A good practical rule of thumb is that you don't need to upload an image for online viewing higher than about 800px wide by 600px high. That's the screen size for about a quarter of our users. If you've created desktop wallpapers you might have reason to post a larger dimension file for that particular image, but for your average photo, 800x600 is a pretty large file when you're viewing it online. Also, at 800x600 a jpg isn't particularly memory intensive unless you've set it to the least lossy compression rating.
