Re: STRAWBERRIES
There are more than 600 varieties of Strawberries, each differ in texture, size, and flavor. Strawberries are easily identified by their red skin, tiny yellow seeds that protrude through the skin, the green regal cap and stem that adorns the top. A colorful and flavorful addition to any meal. Domestically cultivated, strawberries are the most popular of all the berry family. Wild strawberries are much smaller in size, but pack a more intense flavor.
With a heart shape...like a valentine, they are loaded with an unusually high amount of phytonutrients that promote good health.
Historically, strawberries were first known as "Strewberries", as to describe the appearance of the berries being strewn about the stems of the plant.
Ancient Rome lays claim to having first cultivated strawberries. The people of France grew strawberriesin the 13th century, and used the roots and fruit as a herbal medicine to relieve discomfort of skin rashes, and digestive disorders. The particular variety, Fragaria Vesca (Alpine Strawberry), is said to have been used externally as a topical sunburn remedy, and for discolored teeth. Internally, strawberries were used to relieve the symptoms of diarrhea and digestive upset, while the leaves and root were used as a gout treatment.
The strawberry is considered one of the most important small fruits grown in the Western Hemisphere. Today every state in the United States and every province in Canada grows the strawberry plant.
