Understood PK. But I still feel (not saying I'm right) that it's a hardware conflict. Your new modem may be the same make as your original, but it may be a newer model or a model that was actually manufactured at a different site.
With the modem installed, go to control panel>system>hardware>device manager. This is where you should see if there's a hardware conflict. Depending on your version of windows, you look for exclamation marks or other indicators that there's a problem.
Take a look around in there and see if you can see any problems.
