Sorry, I missed this question when you originally posted it. No, ascii characters don't work in guestbooks, nor do most html/etc. It's a protection against malicious scripts. The forums have a lot of protection against that built in that the guestbooks just do differently. I won't go into the different protections on each publicly (for obvious security reasons), but if you're interested in details on why you get numbers and letters in the guestbooks, you can pm me.
