El Salvadorian Restaurants
From tacos to tostados, tamales to tortilla chips, many of us enjoy the spicy, lingering flavor of Mexican food. But sometimes it's easy to get in a Mexican culinary rut. We can forget that there are also other cuisines from countries south of our border.
Take El Salvador, for instance, the cuisine of El Salvador is similar to that of its Central American neighbors. Salvadoran food, however, is far more than a carbon copy of Mexican food partners.
There is a strong reliance on indigenous foods like corn, beans, squash and tomatoes. And the influence of Mayan culture on common dishes is quite strong, mixed in with contributions from the Spanish kitchen. But this tiny country on the Pacific coast has made a unique and rich contribution to the region's cuisine that is out of proportion to its small size.
Go to a Salvadoran restaurant, savor some pupusas (corn tortillas with a fried pork and cheese filling) and pastelitos de carne (little beef pies), along with the spicy marinated cabbage that is usually served with them, and you can add a whole new dimension to your taste bud's experiences.
To go along with your Salvadoran meal, you can order one of their refrescos naturales (natural fruit drinks) or, for a less sweet taste, sip on a Salvadoran Pilsner beer. There are other typical foods from El Salvador, like chilate, nuegados, yucca, atol de elote, tamales (from pork, chicken, beef) and shuco.
PUPUSAS: The typical foods in El Salvador is probably one of the best food anyone can taste! The food that most identifies Salvadorean people are "pupusas". There are different kinds of pupusas: cheese, bean, shrimp, revueltas (made of cheese, beans and chicharon), ayote, etc. Pupusas originated a long time ago. They were created by the Pipiles, the native Indians from El Salvador.
