I know there's another topic about good eats in Wisconsin, but I'm looking for a specific type of cuisine so I figured I would start a new thread.
Simply put, what's your favorite place for a fish fry in the state?
Several years ago my family used to go to a place called
The Chalet, which was a bar and restaurant located just west of 60th Street on Beloit Avenue. That place was very cheap ($7.95 I think) and offered a great all-you-can-eat fish fry with excellent quality fish and very good coleslaw. Unfortunately they closed
Another place we've discovered is
Lakeside Inn on Scenic Phantom Lake, which is located right on Phantom Lake in Mukwonago (unfortunately their webpage on Foodspot appears to be gone now). The fish fry also comes with excellent quality beer battered or breaded cod. You also get the choice of potato - fries, potato pancakes or parsly boiled potatos - coleslaw, and rye bread. If you like bread, order a loaf of their italian bread - it's perfect!
Finally because of some coupons in the mail I have tried the fish fry at
Boulder Juntion (specifically the one in Greenfield on 76th Street) [
website] Their fish fry is not all you can eat but you get 4 large pieces of cod with bread, coleslaw, potato choice, and soup or salad. At $9.95 it's pretty reasonable.
I don't get the hype about some fish fry restaurants. I've been to Meyers on Forest Home Ave. and did not think it was all that hot. I've gone to Serb Hall on several occasions and thought that was terrible as well. The fish was mushy and soggy there and the coleslaw is not your standard creamy coleslaw.
So what other places are good?
