They pay less in taxes than we poorer Americans do and the longer Buy-my-vote-for-your-tax-cut politicians (who right this minute seem to mostly be Republicans, though I know that hasn't always been so) stay in office, the worse the disparency will get.
But I think we can look at the old USSR to see what happens with completely socialized essentials. I'm not sure I want to see government corruption replacing corporate corruption -- at least the corporations occasionally get sued by private citizens or brought up on criminal charges. Rather, a good mix of the two (private and socialized) is probably most efficient. Make sure that people can get the bare essentials at a livable price and then it's the extras that get price-hiked.
Not that I believe that will happen. Either way, essentials will always be overpriced. We're captive consumers. I can't use less fuel to heat my apartment in the winter, nor can I use less gas than it takes me get to and from work every day, no matter how high they jack the price.
