Take full advantage of dnr seedlings. We have planted over 31,000 trees through their program over the last three years. As of this spring we have approximately 26,500 still growing(a pretty good survival rate).
There is still a much cheaper source than this though. Silver maple seeds, Walnuts, Red Maple seeds and many other often grow up to 18" in one year and soon can be out competing weeds in a prepared field. We have about 50 acres into 11 varieties of pine and hardwoods with another 15 acres or so to go in the next few years. If you have the time and dedication to follow through it can be a rewarding experience. One thing that you can not do is just plant and then walk away from your project because that is a guarantee for failure. I have stuck 100's of hours each year into my project and will stick many 100's more but in the end it will all be worth it.
