I believe that our government's sole purpose is to protect its citizens without infringing on them in any way as people or as themselves. It is meant to serve as the organizing point for necessary public works that no single person can really do on their own (like highway creation and maintenance and protecting the environment -- which belongs to everyone and affects everyone -- from destruction by wanton corporations and ignorant individuals who put themselves above everyone else). It is not there to give or dictate its citizens' livelihood, but to give them a safety net and a helping hand to get them back on their own feet when they fall.
