MANITOWOC, Wis. (AP) - Seven high school students face illegal hunting charges for clubbing small game animals to death in what they referred to as "critter beating," a conservation warden says.
The students, who attend high school at Kiel about 20 miles southwest of Manitowoc, began the activities in spring of 2004, and the majority of it happened between May and October of last year, said Warden Robert Stroess of the state Department of Natural
Resources.
He said they would go at night and shine a light in an animal's face to immobilize it before attacking.
"They were going out and shining for animals, and one or more of them would beat the animal to death with a golf club, a baseball bat, garden tools, a hockey stick and a metal pipe," Stroess said.
The charges include 25 citations for hunting violations, Stroess said.
The students are scheduled for initial appearances in Manitowoc County Circuit Court April 19, he said.
If convicted, they face fines, revocation of hunting, fishing and trapping licenses and confiscation of hunting equipment, Stroess said.
