INFORMATION FOR CURTIS, MECAN SPRINGS, AND PLEASANT LAKES
If you like a little variety in your fishing experience, you’ll find it in these three Waushara County lakes. Two of the waters, Curtis and Pleasant, contain basic southern Wisconsin warmwater fisheries. Bill Standke, owner of B&B Tangle-Free Bait Boxes, 540 3rd Ave., Red Granite (920) 566-4995, says you can do well on Largemouth Bass in Pleasant. The bucketmouths run to about 4 pounds, he says, and hit nicely on spinnerbaits and plastic worms tossed to the weeds. Some decent ‘gills also inhabit the lake, and Standke says worm chunks or jig/waxie combinations work well. In Curtis, the fishery is basically the same. Work the weedlines around the lake for Bass and Bluegills. Meanwhile, a change of pace occurs in Mecan Springs. True: you can catch the same kinds of Largemouth and ‘gills by fishing weeds. And there are also some big – repeat, big – Northern Pike here, which hit on spinners, spoons and especially on sucker minnows in the winter. BUT...Mecan Springs also contains something of a seasonal fishery for three species of Trout: Brown, Rainbow, and Brookies. The Springs, it seems, are the headwaters of the Mecan River, which is a fairly well-known Trout stream. According to Al Niebur, area DNR fisheries biologist, this stream is not stocked, so its Trout are natives, and they winter under the ice of the Springs, so you can catch them there in the spring. Browns are probably the predominant species, says Niebur. Live bait is best.
