Bear Lake Info
At 1,358 acres, Bear Lake deserves to be called big water. Located north of Haugen on the Washburn/Barron County line, Bear is clear and deep, and much of its shoreline is publicly owned. This keeps recreation pressure down and helps the lake achieve a reputation as good summer and winter fishing water. Northern Pike is the principal gamefish species here, there are excellent Northern Pike spawning areas in Bear Lake. And, though most of the Northerns here are of the “hammerhandle” variety, a good number grow larger. Spoons or spinnerbaits, whatever you normally use for Northerns, will do just fine here. Meanwhile, you’ll also find a low-density Walleye population, Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, and a fairly good Panfish population in Bear Lake. Trolling for Walleyes the big, shallow flats on the western end and working the wetland areas for Largemouths. You’ll also find Bass off the Boyer Creek inlet on the north end, he says, and Walleyes and Crappies off the shallow, reedy point separating the western and middle bays of the lake. Finally, you’ll find summer Bass and Northerns around the bars and nice weeds in the lake’s eastern section. In winter, much of the lake is good for Panfish and Northerns. You’ll especially want to fish off the Bear Creek inlet on the north side for Walleyes at first ice. Be aware, however, that Bear Lake Walleyes are under a mercury advisory. Consult the DNR’s Health Advisory publication for details. Four public access sites -- one with concrete ramp and blacktop apron -- serve this lake. Parking is scarce at all. There are also several resorts with boat launching facilities and rental boats.
