The Black River is a treasure!
A liesurely canoer's paradise, that's what the Black River is. I've done about a dozen floats on the Black River, including some 50-milers. Put in just below the dam, on the south side of Hwy 54, from the parking lot of the optometrist's shop there (they don't mind).
Then you're in for a treat. White sand beaches every mile or two, sometimes more frequently. Shallow water except for the channel on the outer bank that might run 4 to 10 feet deep, at least till you get 20 miles downriver and the Black River begins growing like, and toward, the Mississippi.
Good fishing. Lots of Eagles to see along the way. Awesome sand bluffs to climb. Wonderful, cold, spring water to drink (use a filtration kit, this stuff goes through cow pastures) along the way.
More about the river trips and towns along the way later. And the Golf Course on the banks of the Black River where you can do 18 holes with a cart, lunch and a drink for $15 (weekday mornings).
