Jackson County is beautiful...except for the junk!
Just spent the last two weekends in Jackson County (beautiful Fall colors) and believe the area is ripe for tourism. John Torinus, president of Serigraph, wrote in an editorial in the last week's Sunday Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the land conservancy movement is alive and well in Wisconsin. Many business leaders and citizens recognize that our state's natural beauty is something to be cherished and preserved...which brings me to this post.
I just can't believe that Jackson County and the towns and villages in it don't take more care to keep the landscape clear of what appear to be "private junkyards." These eyesores appear in the midst of the rolling hills and bluffs of Black River country just when you think you're in God's country.
Anyone who loves slow and lazy canoeing with great fishing and camping on white sand beaches would love the Black River. I first canoed the Black River when I was 16 because a buddy and I thought the area was fantastic, we found a good campsite on the river and the canoe trip out of the resort in Melrose was recommended to us. I've been back for canoeing a dozen times, including more than a few 50 milers. The natural beauty and resources of the area are incredibly inviting.
Just wish the local powers that be would realize what they have and try to "keep it clean" by preventing local property owners from collecting abandoned vehicles, house trailers, appliances and more in their yards.
