My parents always let us have some of their drinks when we were growing up and even let us have a whole glass of Jim Beam and 7 Up at Christmas and New Years Eve. I always felt that's contributed to my brother becoming an alcoholic so I never let my kids have sips of any beer or alcohol. I never told them it was bad either as they had seen us drink at times. As they got older, we told them it was their choice to make.
So in answer to your question Blue, no he has never tasted beer before nor has he ever had any alcohol. When he joined the fraternity, the new pledge group had to make their own "class beer" which he did, but he refused to taste any and the fraternity didn't push the issue either. I think his values come from having gone to Youth Leadership Conferences every year from the time he was in 5th grade all through high school. They taught other things too such as peer mediation and abstinence. And yes, he is still a virgin at the age of 21. He says he just hasn't met the right girl yet and he is looking for someone who is mature and knows what she wants in life. He has little respect for people who "sleep around" just for the fun of it. But, he says he wants to wait until he's out of college and has a job before he thinks about getting serious with anyone.
I'm glad that he has certain values and sticks to them. He has a couple of friends at college who are insisting that he go out drinking next weekend for his birthday, but he said if they keep pushing him about it, he's going to tell them where to go. He has never been one to give in to peer pressure and I'm sure he isn't going to start now.
